what kind of knowledge do you need to be an ... - Education Reference

Question by algutlight: what kind of knowledge do you need to be an ESL teacher?
I know you need to know the basic grammar stuff, parts of speech, etc, etc. What i want to know is if you need linguistics like phonology and phonetics and so forth. If so, what in specific? thanks.

it would be helpful to at least take a phonetics class. as far as what would be REQUIRED depends on who and where you will be teaching. My dad taught an esl class at his church and doesn?t even have a college degree or any phonetics training or anything else like that- just basically worked with the folks on proper grammar and pronunciation. If you are teaching in a school district, the specific district or the state may have particular requirements, so I would check with both the state school agency, and with the ISD. If you are teaching in a college or university, or like a community or continuing education class, you would need to check with the school or whatever entity you hope to work for.
