Porch Vs Deck Paint - Painting - DIY Chatroom - DIY Home ...

Newbie ? Join Date: Sep 2011 Posts: 1	Okay...we have an old victorian home built in late 1800's that needs lots and lots of work/paint. The added deck is made of pine board that are still good. We used a burgundy paint several years ago and it now is chipping, peeling, looks awful. We also have an issue with the neighbor's pine tree that it's branches drip sap on our deck. We are not allowed to cut down the tree and the sap wreaks havoc daily on our property belongings/deck/grill. Any paint that will help to clean up sap and stop chipping and peeling as well? We live in Central New York State so winters are tough. Thank you! Mary

Member ? Join Date: Jan 2011 Location: Cape May, NJ Posts: 995	Hi Mary, welcome to the forum. Firstly, you're going to have to clean all the sap off the painted surface. There may be a ready mix product that does that, check HD, Lowes, etc. Denatured alcohol will work as well. Or, you might try ammonia and water. Then you need to wash the surface, scrape all the loose peeling paint, sand the surface, and then I would apply two coats of a solid deck stain right over the whole surface. Primer/paint is not the optimal choice for deck surfaces. On a political note, this is what we're coming to. You have to suffer all this grief because of a tree. How much liberty are we gradually surrendering? I have a customer who lost a big portion of a tree in front of her house in a storm, a tree which the city owns, and it almost took her son's car out. The tree is dying, certified. If the rest of the tree goes down in a storm it will take a nice portion of her house with it. The city refuses, adamantly, to cut it down or allow her to do it, which she is willing to do. The area of the house where the tree will hit is her son's bedroom. They don't care. His car was spared, he may not be so lucky. In some areas you have to go through hoops and permission to plant a vegetable garden. How ridiculous. We have to wake up soon, before the government is allowed to control every aspect of our property, and our lives. Cut the tree down and accept the consequences, we need to start somewhere. It's infuriating.
