Luxury Real Estate Marketing Tip: Keep Your Message Brief - Real ...

As a luxury real estate marketing professional it is important to communicate who you are and what you do with words and imagery. Your collateral materials and web site should articulate the essence of your brand in a nanosecond.

We often attribute the quote of ?A picture is worth a 1000 words? to Confucius. However, research shows that this attribution to Confucius was given by an advertiser named Fred Barnard who said he called it a Chinese proverb, so that people would take it seriously?. As time went on, Confucius was credited with this adage. Mr. Barnard promoted the use of images on the sides of streetcars as part of an advertisement. His sentence was ?One Look is Worth a Thousand Words (1921 trade journal, Printer?s Ink.) In another ad in 1927, Mr. Barnard used the phrase, ?One Picture is Worth Ten Thousand Words?

More research reveals that in the novel Fathers and Sons written in 1862, the Russian writer Ivan Turgenev wrote, ?A picture shows me at a glance what it takes dozens of pages of a book to expound.?

Here is an example of a picture is worth a thousand words. The entrance to the small 6 acre Dog and Oyster Vineyard in Virginia is flanked by two corkscrew sculptures each measuring 40 feet. There are no signs needed to express what is happening here.

So keep your message brief, your pictures bright and expressive so you don?t need 1000 or 10,000 words to say it.

Plumbing Tips To Help You With Home Plumbing Needs | Home ...

It is very important to to use lots of cold water when running your garbage disposal. The blades on the unit will remain sharper and disposal will proceed with few glitches. If you use hot water it will liquefy the grease, allowing it to accumulate in your drain causing your pipes to clog.

Think about going with brass fixtures when you want new fixtures in the bathroom or kitchen. To begin with, brass fixtures have the benefit of being long lasting and durable. Brass fixtures are also look classier than other fixture options. You can find these in home improvement stores.

Putting in shower heads that are energy-efficient can save you a lot of money in energy costs. Energy efficient shower heads can save you money on your energy bill and water bill. When you install an energy-efficient shower head, you will reduce your home?s water consumption, which means money left in your pocket.

If you have a clogged toilet and a plunger is not helping to clear the blockage, if the water level is low, pouring a bucking of boiling water from a height into the toilet bowl could resolve the problem. This procedure can be repeated if the water level again returns to a level that is too low.

If you come across a pipe that is frozen, try to thaw it out by using a hairdryer. Using the low heat setting will take longer, but at least you won?t have to deal with potential hazards or call a plumber.

A damaged or worn flapper, or a seat that has mineral deposits, lets water run constantly into the bowl, which can dramatically increase water bills. Cleaning the flapper seat and replacing the flapper itself can solve the problem.

Keeping up with maintenance is the number one way to keep plumbers from having to come fix issues. Drain clogs are a common plumbing issue and sometimes expensive to repair when they are not addressed promptly. Practically anything can get stuck in those drains and cause them to lock up, including hair, foreign objects and sediment. A great way to help prevent those clogs is to install a screen on top of the drain. Just make sure that it properly fits your drain. Getting the hair off the screen is much simpler than removing it from the pipe.

Everyone who lives in your home should know where to find the shut off valves to water sources. Every person should know how to turn off the water to the house to prevent flooding. If they are familiar with how to shut the water off, they may prevent the flow of water.

Adequately insulate pipes that are prone to becoming cold during the winter months, such as pipes that reside in attics or exterior walls. There is a formed insulation that wraps around pipes you can buy. Insulating your pipes will keep your water hot, but even more than that, it will prevent bursting of pipes if they do freeze.

Stay away from drain cleaners if possible. Corrosive chemicals erode the metal pipes slowly. When you have a plumbing blockage, consider calling out a professional to determine what the source of the problem is.

Cleaning the aerator will fix low water pressure issues that are caused from sediment buildup. You need to remove, disassemble, and clean the aerator with vinegar and a small brush. Rinse the aerator, reassemble it and reattach it to the faucet. This should help increase the water pressure, because any obstacles in the aerator will have been removed.

Many people aren?t well-versed in plumbing, and choose to pay whatever the plumber is asking for. If you?re a homeowner, it?s important you know enough to understand what a plumber is doing in your house. This will make sure that you aren?t ripped off.

Sticky substances like bananas, chicken skin and pumpkin pulp can clog your drain even if they go through the blades. Get rid of these items prior to using your disposal; you can simply toss them in the trash.

You can prevent your pipes from freezing by applying continual heat to any exposed pipes. If the weather is very cold, your exposed pipes are likely to begin freezing. If they are coming in from the outside, indoor pipes can even freeze! Make sure you keep a small heater or a heat lamp near the pipes so your water continues to flow.

Plumbing, while at first it may seem intimidating, doesn?t have to be complicated at all. You need to learn the basics, however. A little research, along with some common sense, will give you the basics you need to get started on your particular job.

(AP) ? Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps will have their first showdown on the opening night of the U.S. Olympic swimming trials.

The world's top swimmers advanced to Monday's final of the 400-meter individual medley, a loaded race that also includes the silver medalist from last year's world championships, Tyler Clary. Only the top two earn a spot on the team for London.

Lochte, the defending world champion, was the top qualifier in morning preliminaries with a time of 4 minutes, 10.66 seconds. Phelps was next fastest, cruising through his preliminary heat in 4:14.72. Clary was fourth-fastest at 4:15.88.

Phelps is the world-record holder and won the 400 IM at the last two Olympics, but he vowed to drop the grueling event after Beijing. He brought it back over the past year and said he's known "for a while" that he would be in the race at Omaha. The only stumble came beforehand, when Phelps realized he had the wrong cap. He found a plain white model that worked just fine.

"It felt fairly relaxed," said Phelps, a 14-time Olympic gold medalist who plans to retire after these games. "I'm happy."

Lochte was pleased with his effort, though he knows he'll need to go even faster to beat Phelps. He expects his rival to put in a much better time in the evening.

"That was the easiest 4:14 he's ever done, that I've seen in the whole entire world," Lochte said. "It looked really, really smooth for him. Tonight's definitely going to be a dogfight. It's not just going to be me and Michael. It's going to be Tyler Clary, too. It's definitely going to be a fight."

Phelps' coach, Bob Bowman, was coy about his plans before the trials but said he's known since a March meet in Indianapolis that Phelps was going to compete in the 400 IM.

"He did one and it's really the best one he's ever done in a season," Bowman said. "He was like, 'Man, it would be a shame not to do this.' We'll know a lot more tonight whether that was a good decision."

Clary expected Phelps to scratch from the event, which would have made it much easier to qualify for a spot on the Olympic team. Now, Clary has to beat either Lochte or Phelps to compete in the 400 IM in London.

"It will definitely be a more interesting race now," Clary said, managing a slight grin. "All I can do is control myself. It doesn't matter to me who's in the heat. I'm going to go out and swim the race that I've got in my mind. I think that'll be good enough."

Lochte is eager to face Phelps as many times as possible in Omaha before they resume their rivalry in London.

"Of course, I want to win," Lochte said. "I hate not winning. I love to win. But if it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen. I'm not going to beat myself up over it."

Dana Vollmer, coming back from the disappointment of missing the Olympics four years ago, was the top qualifier in the 100 butterfly. She posted the fastest time ever in the United States (56.59), breaking a 12-year-old mark, and has her sights on Sarah Sjoestroem's world record (56.06), which was set in 2009 during the era of high-tech, rubberized suits.

"It's always in the back of my mind," said Vollmer, the defending world champion in the 100 fly. "I definitely want to do a 55."

Vollmer, who made the 2004 Olympics as a 16-year-old, battled injuries and medical problems for much of the past decade, but she's healthy now and thriving with a new diet.

"I feel better than I did at worlds," she said. "That race felt good, but I still feel like I didn't put all I have into it knowing it's just the prelims. To be at that time, it's definitely a good sign for my next swims."

Romney: States have right to secure their borders

(AP) ? Mitt Romney on Monday said states have a duty and a right to secure their borders even as he called for a bipartisan national immigration strategy.

The likely Republican nominee did not address the merits of the Supreme Court's decision to strike down key parts of Arizona's tough immigration enforcement law. But he used it as an opportunity to criticize President Barack Obama for inaction on immigration reform until recently.

"This represents yet another broken promise by this president. I believe that each state has the duty ? and the right ? to secure our borders and preserve the rule of law, particularly when the federal government has failed to meet its responsibilities," Romney said in a written statement released before he left Salt Lake City to fly to a planned fundraiser in Arizona.

Romney has worked to soften his rhetoric on immigration policy since becoming the presumptive Republican nominee for president. During the Republican primary, Romney called Arizona's law a "model" ? though he never explicitly endorsed the law.

The Obama administration sued to block the Arizona law soon after its enactment two years ago. During the primary, Romney said he would have ended the lawsuit against Arizona if elected president.

The Monday Supreme Court decision upholds Arizona's "show me your papers" requirement for the moment. But it takes the teeth out of it by prohibiting police officers from arresting people on minor immigration charges.

The court struck down these three major provisions: requiring all immigrants to obtain or carry immigration registration papers; making it a state criminal offense for an illegal immigrant to seek work or hold a job; and allowing police to arrest suspected illegal immigrants without warrants.

Best Legal Representation: Personal Injury Attorney, West Palm Beach

Nobody wants to be neglected, wronged or injured in any shape or form. The avoidance of emotional and psychological pain is something we all devote our time to. But life is never predictable and people are often thrown into unexpected situations.

What?s your latest hospital record due to an injury inflicted by someone else? An injury is any type of emotional or physical distress inflicted by a person or institution. It doesn?t matter where you?re from since everyone is vulnerable to physical harm.

Injuries can happen suddenly and without warning. It could happen during one of your morning jogs or afternoon walks when a car sideswipes you out of nowhere. After making sure that you?re alright, what?s the next rational step to make?

The expert help of a personal injury lawyer is the next thing you should get. Taking care of the legalities of your case is a job you should not take on by yourself. Hiring a personal injury attorney will streamline the process since they know specific laws that apply to your case.

When looking for a Personal Injury Attorney, West Palm Beach, there are three important things you have to keep in mind. One, there are so many law firms around so it is important that you pick the one that will really tend to your needs. There are those who will settle for a quick way out, which means quick cash for their compensation.

Two, transactions made by phone is a hassle free way of dealing with things but you need to make sure that you meet your lawyer in person at least twice. Correspondence via e-mails and calls are certainly very convenient but it can never really be up to the standards of a real handshake. With all the stresses and troubles you have just gone through (or are still going through), you deserve focused and personalized representation from legal advisors who really care.

A good legal service is not just about a lawyer who is willing to spend time with you to get the facts of your case. This means that they also offer a specific legal service for your case. If you were injured in a car crash then go specifically to a personal injury lawyer who has extensive experience in similar cases.

Three, look into available low-key firms. Always try to choose lawyers who do not spend so much on marketing and promoting their services. Intense marketing costs a lot and to be profitable, firms increase the fees their clients need to pay.

Some lawyers in Florida get a lot of clients and charge bigger fees without looking into each and every case they take. The main goal is to make a significant profit so they can still be lucrative despite large expenditures on advertising. Smaller and less flashy firms tend to have a smaller number of clients which means the lawyers are not frazzled by their case load.

There are a number of lawyers and legal companies in and near the West Palm Beach area that you can choose from. Do not rush in making a decision. You have been hurt, injured and wronged, and you deserve to have nothing less than the best personal injury attorney, West Palm Beach.

Looking for answers: Second baseball team puts El Paso Diablos' future in doubt

?? Photos: El Paso Diablos baseball

The possible arrival of a Triple-A baseball team and a new city-sponsored ballpark could jeopardize the future of El Paso's lone baseball team for the past 30 years -- the Diablos.

In the proposed contract that will be presented at Tuesday's City Council meeting, a non-compete clause states the city will not extend its agreement with the current tenant of Cohen Stadium, which is the Diablos, past April 16, 2016.

That means the Diablos must find a new home after the 2015 season. And it probably can't be in El Paso because the non-compete clause also prohibits the city, or others, from operating Cohen Stadium or any other facility that "would accommodate affiliated or independent professional baseball, in competition with the new ballpark."

"It was always our intention that when we recruited a minor league team that it would replace the other one," City Manager Joyce Wilson said.

The Tigua tribe purchased the Diablos last summer for $500,000 to become the first local owner of the team in 12 years, said Karl Maahs, general manager of Speaking Rock and Socorro Entertainment Centers. In the Tiguas' first season as owners, they spent an additional $750,000 on upgrades, which included restrooms, skyboxes, a marquee and a swimming pool.

No city official contacted

the Tiguas about the non-compete clauses, Maahs said.

"We're disappointed that no one, not the mayor or City Council members, warned us," Maahs said.

"I just found out (on Friday) that we're going to get thrown out. We bought the Diablos -- and took on a lot of debt -- not to make money but as a quality-of-life issue, to make sure we had baseball in El Paso owned by locals that preserved the Diablos name. We poured $1.25 million into this stadium, which is owned by the city, and no one bothered to tell us."

The Diablos' front office would not comment.

"I think that the Tiguas have been in tune with what we've been doing all along," Mayor John Cook said. "We've been talking about trying to attract a Triple-A baseball team for well over a year. I think you have to think more about El Paso's future than the other team. For us to go from the what the Diablos are to a Triple-A team is a huge step for this city."

City Rep. Carl Robinson, who represents the Cohen Stadium area, disagreed with Cook.

"I'm not against the stadium, but I have questions," Robinson said.

"It's not so much what you do, but how you do it. We didn't include the Tiguas at the table and I have not had questions answered about the ability to support two professional teams and the future of Cohen Stadium, which the taxpayers own."

Wilson said that at the last discussions to renew the Diablos' contract, the city's intention to pursue a minor league team was clear. The Tiguas did not own the team at the time, Maahs said.

Maahs insists the Diablos will continue to exist and the Tiguas will operate the team. Maahs suggested the Lower Valley, the Socorro Entertainment Center and even Las Cruces as possible places to play. He said the organization might offer free tickets to see baseball in conjunction to see the free concerts.

That may be necessary as the Diablos try to compete. Attendance has been scattered, at best. The club has not had a winning season since 2007, including back-to-back last-place finishes and a 7-25 record as of Friday.

"The reality is that the product the Diablos have offered is not high quality, especially since they're not affiliated," said city Rep. Steve Ortega.

The Triple-A team -- which does not have a name and could not be called the Diablos, because the Tiguas own that name -- would pose further challenges. The state-of-the-art stadium would boast 7,000 to 9,000 seats, 20 to 30 luxury suites and 250 to 500 club seats.

The team would also showcase professional players, one step away from Major League Baseball, with an affiliated professional team. The Diablos belong to the American Association, an independent league whose players rarely get to the major leagues.

"There's a big difference between independent baseball and affiliated baseball," said Jim Paul, former owner of the Diablos when they were a Double-A team. "In minor league baseball, the players are owned and signed and cared for by a Major League team. On any given night, you can probably see 16 to 18 players who will play or have played at the highest level. Outside of a professional team, there's nothing that can beat that."

Perhaps not even a UTEP game, Paul said.

And that has the Diablos -- despite Paul's and Maahs' feelings that the club can overcome several big obstacles -- scrambling and asking questions.

"Our future is up in the air," Maahs said. "And, despite our efforts to do good things in this community, we didn't get any warning about it."

Rio+20 Summit Sustains Little More Than Sentiment

From left to right, U.N. General Assembly President Nassir Abdulaziz Al Nasser, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff, Brazil's Secretary of the Conference Luis Figueiredo Machado and Rio+20 Secretary-General Sha Zukang attend the closing ceremony of conference in Rio de Janeiro Friday.

The Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development was the biggest United Nations conference ever, but it may be one of the biggest duds. It produced no major agreements ? just a vaguely worded declaration that has been widely derided.

More than 45,000 people registered for the event in Rio de Janeiro, but diplomats couldn't even agree about the meeting's objective until 2:45 a.m. on Tuesday, just before heads of state and other high-level delegates started arriving in Rio.

They finally agreed to a long-winded declaration about alleviating poverty and leaving the planet livable for future generations. It was more platitudes than anything else, which sparked anger and disappointment.

Friday, on the final day of the conference, former Costa Rican president Jose Maria Figueres didn't even try to hide his contempt as he addressed the conference's secretary general, Sha Zukang, at a news conference.

"One thousand five hundred CEOs from 60 nations, global NGOs from all over the world, have come to your conference and committed to action," he said. "Those who have failed you, Mr. Sha, are the governments. Those are the ones that have failed you, sir."

Actually, conference organizer Sha replied, he did not intend to defend the conclusions. There were simply too many competing interests. It's not his job to make people happy.

"My job was to make everybody equally unhappy. If one party's happy ... then others are not happy. ... So equally unhappy means equally happy," he said.

Obviously, there is no consensus about what path the world needs to take to pull billions of people out of poverty in a manner that will sustain the environment and leave resources for future generations.

Sha, who is about to retire from his career at the UN, then asked, what good are big promises, anyway? He pointed specifically to the ambitious pledges made at the big UN climate meeting in Copenhagen two years ago.

"Nobody forced you to make commitments. By why comply with the commitments? It's voluntary, but you're voluntarily lying to the people because you're not honoring them," Sha said.

Clearly, the meeting in Rio has raised some existential questions for the United Nations. Achim Steiner, who heads the UN Environment Program, pins lot of the difficulty on a new political landscape.

"Here in Rio 2012, despite, in a sense, the impression that this is still a debate between North and South, between rich and poor, between those who have natural resources and those who don't ? in fact, the world is much more complex," he says.

There's the economic turmoil in Europe and the political divide in the United States. But also, emerging economies like China and India are suddenly big players still trying to balance economic development, the environment and social issues.

So did any good come from Rio+20? Manish Bapna, acting president of the World Resources Institute, says at least the world has agreed to work on a new set of goals to promote sustainable development.

"The next two, three years will be quite a bit of work in trying to define what they are, what they mean, how they can be achieved," he says. "But I think that could be an important outcome that emerges from Rio+20."

While that may sound like more just talk, the reality is that collective goals ? like combating climate change, preserving the oceans and alleviating hunger and poverty ? do require collective action, and therefore consensus. The problem, of course, is that talk doesn't keep pace with the rapidly changing conditions on our planet.

Ween's Former Frontman Addresses Band's Split

'My decision to leave Ween .... was absolutely not made in haste,' Aaron Freeman tells Rolling Stone.
By James Montgomery

Aaron Freeman
Photo:

Last month, much to the consternation of those who worship at the altar of the Boognish, Ween's Aaron Freeman announced — rather matter-of-factly — that he was ending Ween, telling Rolling Stone "It was a good run."

That was apparently a surprise to Freeman's longtime musical partner, Mickey "Dean Ween" Melchiondo, who wrote on his Facebook page that the breakup "is news to me, all I can say for now I guess."

But now, in a new statement to Rolling Stone, Freeman addressed the split — and Ween's fans — letting it be known that his decision was not a rash one.

"I want to thank each and every one of you all for your kind words and support. It means a lot. My decision to leave Ween, however interpreted, was absolutely not made in haste," Freeman's statement reads. "It's evolved over a decade's worth of internal and external struggle." Freeman didn't elaborate on those struggles, but did add that he has no bad blood with Melchiondo, whom he founded Ween with more than 25 years ago. And he closed by saying that he'll continue to make music ... minus the Gene Ween moniker.

"Know that I am extremely proud of all that is Ween. And while Mickey and I are going our separate ways, I wish him only the best. I will always have nothing but love and respect for what we created together," the statement reads. "I need to now move on for myself and for my family. I still, as always, look forward to a future filled with music as Aaron Freeman."

Aspiring bank robbers, take heed. New statistical analyses of confidential bank data suggest that mountains of riches aren't in your future, but that a jail cell is.

"The return on an average bank robbery is, frankly, rubbish," wrote the authors of a new article about the economics of British bank robberies in Significance, a quarterly statistics journal published by the American Statistical Association and Royal Statistical Society. "[I]t is so low that it is not worth the banks' while to spend as little as ?4,500 [$7,000] per cashier at every branch on rising screens to deter [bank robberies]."

These and other conclusions emerge from a confidential data set obtained by economists Neil Rickman and Robert Witt at the University of Surrey, and Barry Reilly at the University of Sussex. The trio spent months negotiating with the British Banker's Association, or BBA, to obtain confidential records detailing 364 bank heists that occurred over three years in the U.K.

The data reveal how many robbers pulled off with each heist, if they were armed, what security measures were present, how much they escaped with, whether or not they were caught, bank location (and thus proximity to police stations), and more. Such detailed bank robbery data is not available in the U.S. where, by contrast, if U.S. banks even record most of these details, they are lost in anonymity in the FBI 's quarterly reports on bank robberies.

"There hasn't been a lot of work done on this problem because most data sets only tell you if a robbery occurred. The size of a robber's takings is sensitive to banks, so they keep it confidential,"? Rickman says. "We're very lucky to get the data we have."

Game of numbers
About 80,000 robberies occur in the U.K. each year, and of these less than 0.5 percent were bank robberies. Averaged across 10,500 bank branches in the region, the odds of a bank robbery at any particular branch in recent years work out to about one in 100. "One element to being a successful bank robber is not only walking away uncaptured, but the amount of money you walk away with," Rickman says. "Walking away with ?10 [$15], for example, isn't something I'd consider successful."

By averaging the work of the best criminals with the worst?and every crook in between?from 2005 through 2008, the data paint a bleak picture for criminals eyeing a future career in larceny.

The data reveal that the average U.K. bank robbery consists of 1.6 robbers and nets ?20,330.50 ($31,600) per heist, with a standard deviation of ?53,510.20 ($83,000). Assuming an equal share, the average take was ?12,706.60 ($19,700) per robber, per heist?roughly equivalent to a coffee shop barista's annual salary.

Wielding a gun increased the average haul by ?10,300.50 ($16,000), as did adding more robbers to a raid. But going alone netted the average robber more money, because the amount gained by increasing a heist party did not outpace the hit taken by splitting an individual robber's spoils.

Dangerous career choice
The amounts are not chump change, Rickman noted, but bank robbing is risky business. Roughly 33 percent of U.K. bank heists end with no robber earning anything, and about 20 percent of raids end in capture. The odds of arrest get worse as a robber attempts more heists. On a robber's fourth heist, for example, the odds of capture compound to 59 percent. "Somehow, I expected most bank robbers to be doing much better than what the data actually show," Rickman says. "Would I pick up a firearm to share 20,000 quid with another person? Probably not."

Hunger Games Sequel to Be Partially Shot in IMAX

hunger games catching fire jennifer lawrence katniss everdeen

Director Gary Ross? frenetic editing and photography was one aspect of?The Hunger Games that many fans won?t miss in the sequel,?The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which Ross has passed on.

Of course, that was a deliberate creative maneuver on Ross? part ? and one which he had already indicated would not be repeated in Catching Fire, since it wouldn?t enhance the story on an artistic level. But since he?s no longer involved with the sequel, it?s a moot point. Moving on?

It turns out Catching Fire director Francis Lawrence will have to employ a steadier hand with the movie, given that certain portions are going to be shot in the IMAX format. It probably goes without saying that the second Hunger Games flick has officially been announced for an IMAX release (like its predecessor).

THR has confirmed the decision by Lionsgate/Summit, which was surely inspired by the success of last year?s Mission: Impossible ? Ghost Protocol ? and the surefire box office returns for next month?s The Dark Knight Rises, both of which were shot using IMAX cameras (more than an hour?s worth, with TDKR).

Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen will return in 'Catching Fire'

One of the big issues for movie geeks this year is the ?3D or IMAX?? debate ? and so far, IMAX seems to be winning, judging by how the box office returns for films like Hunger Games, The Avengers, and Men in Black III have been cushioned by high-attendance from IMAX screenings (in some cases with the ?added benefit? of 3D). Even viewing experiences that do not stand to gain a whole lot from the massive scale (such as the currently-playing Dark Shadows, this week?s Rock of Ages, and the upcoming Frankenweenie) are all being (or have been) released in IMAX ? hoping to take advantage of film patrons who feel the price upgrade really pays off.

Does shooting Catching Fire in IMAX make sense, from an artistic perspective? Suzanne Collins? novel does focus a fair amount on world-building, as it reveals the numerous districts of Panem. Furthermore, our hero Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) comes to appreciate the daunting impact which she and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) have had; their act of rebellion in the Hunger Games arena incited rebellion around the nation (and causes the Capitol to tighten its grip on the populace). That?s all to say: on a thematic level, Catching Fire?is a big story ? and needs to properly set the stage for all-out warfare in the final chapter, Mockingjay ? so IMAX seems like the way to go.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will open in regular and IMAX theaters around the U.S. on November 22nd, 2013.

Obama leads Ray Bradbury tributes

President Barack Obama has led the tributes to science-fiction author Ray Bradbury, who died on Tuesday aged 91.

The US President said: "His gift for storytelling reshaped our culture and expanded our world.

"But Ray also understood that our imaginations could be used as a tool for better understanding, a vehicle for change."

Bradbury's best-known works included Fahrenheit 451 and the Martian Chronicles.

He wrote hundreds of novels, short stories, plays and television and film scripts during his long career.

Director Stephen Spielberg cited the late author as a huge influence on his work.

"He was my muse for the better part of my sci-fi career," Spielberg said.

"He lives on through his legion of fans. In the world of science fiction and fantasy and imagination, he is immortal."

Fellow authors have also paid tribute to Bradbury.

Chocolat author Joanne Harris told the BBC: "He was the most delightful man, sweet and terribly youthful in spite of his quite advanced years.

"There is this real sense of wonder in all of his writing, and discovery. And when you look at his later work, the things he wrote in the last five years or so, it is still there."

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, science-fiction writer Brian Aldiss said: "Ray Bradbury was not like most writers of science-fiction. He came from the country and he liked to stay in the country.

"This shows up in most of his books, The Martian Chronicles, for instance. It's a transplant of American countryside into the planet Mars. It could never happen, but the great thing is that you tell a technological fairytale.

"That was the attraction of much of what Bradbury wrote."

Stephen King told the Hollywood Reporter: "The sound I hear today is the thunder of a giant's footsteps fading away.

"But the novels and stories remain, in all their resonance and strange beauty."

Luis J Rodriguez, author of Always Running, added: "Kids still read him. They still love him. People come and go, but he's one of those writers who continually engages young people. I think his legacy is going to last for a long time."

Bradbury's publisher HarperCollins said in a statement: "In a career spanning more than seventy years, Ray Bradbury has inspired generations of readers to dream, think, and create."

Many other celebrities posted tributes on social media websites.

Samsung Galaxy S III coming to all major U.S. carriers this month

17 hrs.

Samsung's Galaxy S III ? the highly anticipated follow-up to the top-selling Galaxy S II ? will be?coming to AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and U.S. Cellular this month. Exact pricing and availability dates will vary by carrier, but we do know that the device's price will be "starting from $199."

T-Mobile will be offering the Galaxy S III starting June 21. At that time, the device will be available through T-Mobile's own stores and website as well as select retailers.

Sprint will have the Galaxy S III on June 21. A 16GB version will be sold for $199.99 and a 32GB version for $249.99 (both prices require a new two-year service agreement, of course). Online pre-orders will start on June 5.

Verizon will start taking online pre-orders for the Galaxy S III on June 6 ??at 7 a.m. ET, in case you need the specific time?? but hasn't revealed when it will ship the device. We're assuming it'll be around June 21, like the others, but it's hard to say with Verizon.

We're still waiting on details from AT&T (and U.S. Cellular, if you care about that).

The Galaxy S III?is the most anticipated phone of the year, if you judge by the success Samsung has had with its predecessor (and ignore the iPhone's existence). Vatican criticizes US nun's book on sexuality

(AP) ? The Vatican on Monday sharply criticized a book on sexuality written by a prominent American nun, saying it contradicted church teaching on issues like masturbation, homosexuality and marriage and that its author had a "defective understanding" of Catholic theology.

The Vatican's orthodoxy office said the book, "Just Love: A Framework for Christian Sexual Ethics" by Sister Margaret Farley, a member of the Sisters of Mercy religious order and emeritus professor of Christian ethics at Yale Divinity School, posed "grave harm" to the faithful.

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith said that in the 2006 book, Farley either ignored church teaching on core issues of human sexuality or treated it as merely one opinion among many.

Farley said Monday she never intended the book to reflect current official Catholic teaching. Rather, she said, she wrote it to explore sexuality via various religious traditions, theological resources and human experience.

The Farley critique, signed by the American head of the congregation, Cardinal William Levada, comes amid the Vatican's recent crackdown on the largest umbrella group of American sisters. The Vatican last month essentially imposed martial law on the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, accusing it of undermining church teaching and imposing certain "radical feminist themes" that were incompatible with Catholicism.

It ordered a full-scale overhaul of the group and appointed three bishops to carry it out.

The crackdown on Farley, a top American theologian, will likely fuel greater resentment at Rome among more liberal-minded American sisters.

The Vatican examination of the book began in 2010 and involved seeking Farley's responses to its concerns. After her replies failed to satisfy the Congregation, it moved to a full-fledged "examination in cases of urgency" that concluded Dec. 14.

Pope Benedict XVI approved the decision last March and ordered the decision published.

In its statement, the Vatican singled out specific problems in Farley's book which it said "affirms positions that are in direct contradiction with Catholic teaching in the field of sexual morality."

Farley, for example, writes that masturbation doesn't raise any moral problems and can actually help relationships rather than hinder them. The Vatican asserted that according to church teaching "masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action."

Farley wrote that homosexual people as well as their activities should be respected. Church teaching holds that gays should be respected but that homosexual acts are "intrinsically disordered."

On gay marriage, Farley said legal recognition of gay marriage can help transform the stigmatization of gays. Levada wrote back that approving gay marriage would not only signal approval of "deviant behavior" but would obscure the value of traditional marriage between man and woman in society.

"The principles of respect and non-discrimination cannot be invoked to support legal recognition of homosexual unions," he wrote.

In her statement, Farley said she had aimed to propose a framework for sexual ethics that "uses a criteria of justice" in evaluating sexual relations.

She acknowledged that her responses to certain issues do depart from traditional doctrine, but said they nonetheless were coherent in theological and moral traditions.

"The fact that Christians (and others) have achieved new knowledge and deeper understanding of human embodiment and sexuality seems to require that we at least examine the possibility of development in sexual ethics," she wrote.

She said she appreciated the Vatican's work but lamented that her positions weren't reflected in the Congregation's final document.

The Rev. James Martin, a liberal-leaning Jesuit author, said the notification will sadden many Catholic theologians who consider Farley a mentor.

"It will also, inevitably, raise strong emotions among those who already feel buffeted by the Vatican's Apostolic Visitation of Catholic sisters in the U.S., and its intervention into the LCWR," said Martin, who has been a vocal supporter of U.S. sisters since the Vatican crackdown.

Farley has received 11 honorary degrees over her lifetime, is a past president of the Society of Christian Ethics and the Catholic Theological Society of America, and won an award in 2008 for "Just Love."

That said, Farley doesn't identify herself as a member of the Sisters of Mercy on either her official Yale biography or on the book's cover.

The Vatican criticism, while seemingly harsh, is rather tame. It's not a formal censure of Farley herself, but just the book. And given that Farley doesn't teach at a Catholic university, the Vatican couldn't forbid her from teaching as it has done with other Catholic theologians who don't toe the Vatican line.

But the Vatican did seem indirectly to hold Farley's superiors to blame for having allowed her to voice such positions that are so contrary to church doctrine. The Vatican notification said it was saddened that a "member of an institute of consecrated life" would do such a thing.

Farley's superior, Sister Pat McDermott, defended Farley and said she was deeply saddened that the Vatican had criticized "the significant pastoral and ethnical thinking that are represented in her book."
