Publix Grocery Shopping w/ Capri Sun Coupons - 53 Worth of ...

I knew I had to head for Publix yesterday, as Publix has a Capri Sun for $1.79 this week, and I had a bunch of Capri Sun coupons to use, several of them with expiration dates yesterday. Since my husband is back in school full-time and works full-time, there are no rides unless I want to go grocery shopping in the busy afternoons/evenings with three kids in tow. So, despite gloomy weather and threat of rain I bundled up my toddler in the stroller and headed for the stores.?

We managed to get to JoAnn's, CVS Pharmacy, Target and Publix, but when we got to Publix we were running low on time. I had to get back to pick up my two oldest sons at school at 2 p.m., and I left Publix at 1:15 p.m. I had two miles left, and I definitely underestimated the weight of 6 Capri Sun ten packs, 2 Diet Coke 12 packs and the rest of the groceries. I ran some, I walked some and I pushed some....and it was tough! I will admit it, I was beat, and I had to keep the pep talk going. My little one loved his fast stroll, and I was sweating like a pig to say it mildly.?

We made it to my house at 1:45 p.m, and I had a few minutes to unload everything before I continued the walk/run towards the kids school. It usually takes me 10 -15 minutes to walk over there, but I knew I could be five minutes late as they do not come out when the bell rings.?

Just as I was about to run off again, my husband called me...he had gotten out of school early and wanted to know, if we needed him to pick us up since it was still raining. Sigh of relief....!!! My husband was amazed that I was not at school yet, since I am usually very early, and if there are rain in the forecast I might even show up extremely early just to make sure that I am at least at the school to wait with the boys until the rain slows down.?

Grocery shopping surely was like exercising, and before I could pack the groceries away I had to take a shower as running in South Florida is very very hot.

I did get almost all of my grocery shopping done, and I got some amazing savings at Publix.

Essential Gear for a Great Backpacking Experience for Beginners ...

Are you wondering about what necessary gear you need for a great hiking experience? You may require all of the items mentioned below but they?ll vary slightly based on whether you are hiking in the mountains, a long distance trail or merely a weekend in a State Park. Your hiking gear does not have to be pricey; however there are some pieces you should usually consider for a more comfy journey.

Necessary Backpacking Gear

1. Hiking Footgear ?your boots is possibly the most important piece of hiking gear, peculiarly a good pair of hiking boots because if your feet hurt or your bet blisters it won?t be an enjoyable experience. Never forget to get hiking socks also.

2. Backpack ?this is your 2nd piece of necessary gear for your hike comes in several different styles and sizes. Your backpack should be lightweight, be large enough for your camping gear and food, have additional pockets for equipment and your water bottles. A rain cover is a nice option though many walkers utilise a poncho tarp as has multi-uses.

3. Camping gear ?ought to include a bivy tent (another term for bivouac which refers to little camping tents and shelters). There are a variety of styles includes small tents, hammock tents, tarp shelters, poncho tents, bivy sacks (actually just later sleeping bags) which are all very lightweight and compact to carry. You will also need a lightweight sleeping bag, pots and a camp stove.

4. Food and water ?meals while in the out of doors are always a highlight of your day. Pack high energy nibbles like trail mix, energy bars, bananas along with a light lunch during the day. Dinners are a rather more personal option with everything from pasta to freeze dried foods. Never forget to drink a lot of water as a scarcity of hydration will cause cramps and loss of energy too.

5. Map and/or guidebook ?you need to know where you are headed so this is also an indispensable item of hiking gear. If hiking in a wilderness area it is also recommended you carry a compass or GPS and have a basic know-how on their use.

6. Safety items ? a first aid kit, always a necessary piece of hiking gear on any hike. Your kit should contain materials to treat minor cuts, blisters and burns. A cellular telephone is also a brilliant idea in the event of emergencies. You need a flashlight too.

7. Clothing ?dependent on the conditions your clothing desires to keep you warm, dry and cushty. This may include a wind jacket, rainwear, hiking pants or shorts, long sleeve shirt and sun hat. Remember to pack the shades, suntan lotion, toiletries, bug repellent also.

Now that you are all packed for your backpacking trip with your essential hiking gear go out and have a superb time in the out-of-doors.

Find out about about the varied makes of light-weight back packing shelters at Bivy Tents. Particularly you should check out the info on bivy sacks.

BlackBerries are used to commit Cyber Crimes in SKN | Cyber ...

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts ? IN every community the world over, criminals exist and have been committing crimes even as far back as the Stone Age. Today, however, the modus operandi of criminals has significantly changed and, with the advancement of technology, the world has seen the emergence of a new strategy called Cyber Crime which is being perpetrated by many, including white collar criminals.

?

According to Tech Terms.com, Cyber Crime is defined as ?a criminal activity done using computers and the Internet. This includes anything from downloading illegal music files to stealing millions of dollars from online bank accounts. Cybercrime also includes non-monetary offenses, such as creating and distributing viruses on other computers or posting confidential business information on the Internet?.

?

To combat this new form of criminal activity, Computer Forensics was introduced to identify and prosecute the perpetrators.

?

Computer Forensics, which is also known as Computer Forensic Science, is a branch of Digital Forensic Science that pertains to legal evidence found in computers and digital storage media.

?

According to Steve Hailey, an Information Technology veteran, ?At a basic level, Computer Forensics is the analysis of information contained within and created with computer systems and computing devices, typically in the interest of figuring out what happened, when it happened, how it happened, and who was involved.??

?

Additionally, the objective of Computer Forensics is to examine digital media in a forensically sound manner with the aim of identifying, preserving, recovering, analysing and presenting facts and opinions about the information.

?

Apart from the standard computers, BlackBerries are also used to perpetrate Cyber Crimes. They are defined as ?mobile smart devices that combine a number of functions including emails, web browsing, text messaging, schedule management, and mobile phone into one portable handset?.

?

It is reported that one of the many successful groups in the US that has employed Computer Forensics in its fight against Cyber Crimes is the Redding Police Department in collaboration with the Shasta County District Attorney?s Office.

?

This group, headed by Shasta County District Attorney?s Chief Investigator Dan Kartchner, since 2000, was instrumental in putting dozens of murderers, child porn traffickers and embezzlers behind bars.

?

The report noted that where once an investigator relied on such skills as dusting for fingerprints, interviewing suspects or writing search warrants, Kartchner had to learn how to unencrypt locked files, hack passwords, restore deleted items and scan a computer?s Internet search log.

?

This media house has learnt that Cyber Crimes are being committed in St. Kitts and Nevis, and quite recently a related case was tried at the Basseterre Magistrate?s Court but details of the perpetrator and its findings were unavailable.

?

At the conclusion of that case, SKNVibes spoke with Corporal Carl Greaux, who informed that a number of officers in the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF) were trained in Computer Forensics and that he is among that special group.

?

?The government of St. Kitts and Nevis saw the importance of Computer Forensics examination and took the initiative in 2009 and trained persons in Computer Forensics. In addition, the government also passed in law No. 27 of 2009, Electronic Crimes Act, 2009 in order to address computer and other electronic crimes,? Greaux said.

?

He noted that a Computer Forensics Examiner might be called upon to perform any of a number of different types of computer investigation and the RSCNPF is equipped to successfully complete such tasks.

?

?We have all heard of or read about the use of Computer Forensics by law enforcement agencies to help catch criminals. The criminal might be a thief who was found with evidence of his crime when his home or office computer was searched, or a government employee who was found to have stolen funds from public accounts by manipulating accounting software to hide funds transfers.
?
?I think the government trained these persons, of which I am one, so that they may help to protect the information their respective departments maintain. It could be as simple as making sure government employees don?t misuse the access they have been granted to view confidential information by periodically reviewing their activities,? he explained.

?

He further explained that Computer Forensics is a rapidly growing profession and some lawyers do hire Computer Forensics Examiners to assist in the examination of personal computers belonging to spouses involved in divorce proceedings.

?

?The focus of such investigations is usually to find information about assets that the spouse may be hiding and to which the other spouse is entitled,? he added.

?

Greaux noted that this field of work is vast and in addition to the initial basic training, a dedicated examiner always seeks to enhance his/her knowledge by keeping abreast with advance technology.

?

?Each of these areas seems entirely unique. After one has been taught the basics, obtains the appropriate equipment and follows the laid down proper procedures, one must continue to educate oneself in order to efficiently and effectively conduct these investigations and provide a better service to the general public,? Greaux stressed.

Travelers wait for flights to resume after Irene

A departures board indicates that many flights, mostly to the New York area, are canceled at Raleigh-Durham International Airport Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011, due to Hurricane Irene. Empty train tracks are seen in New York City, Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011, after Tropical Storm Irene, downgraded from a hurricane, slammed the region earlier in the day. Officials said they weren't sure when mass transit would be fully restored and Amtrak said trains from New York to Florida will be canceled Monday, as will the car train between Lorton, Va., and Sanford, Fla. (AP Photo/Karly Domb Sadof)

(AP) ? Many travelers heading to and from the East Coast still face days of delays even as airlines start flying again Monday at major airports that closed for Tropical Storm Irene.

Ground transportation ? including New York City's subways ? also started easing back into service Sunday evening, though disruptions remained widespread.

More than 11,000 flights were canceled nationwide over the weekend, and hundreds more will be scrubbed Monday morning, a flight-tracking service said.

There's no easy way to squeeze all those displaced passengers onto scheduled flights, especially if airports around New York ? the nation's busiest airspace ? encounter delays reopening Monday. And ground transport alternatives remain limited, with bus and train service disrupted into Monday as well along the East Coast.

Airlines won't say how many passengers have been grounded since Irene came ashore in North Carolina on Saturday.

FlightAware, which tracks cancelations, put the total around 650,000, noting that many of the 11,800-plus flights canceled so far were on regional airlines that use small planes. Some travel experts suggested much larger numbers ? 1 million or more.

Finding open seats will be especially difficult this week because it's the last gasp of the summer vacation season.

"We're coming into the Labor Day holiday weekend, so a lot of those flights are already full," said Todd Lehmacher, a spokesman for US Airways.

Airlines resumed flights Sunday at airports around Washington, Philadelphia and Richmond, Va. But the longer closure of the New York area's Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark, N.J., airports means travel delays will continue rippling across the country.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the three airports, said late Sunday that Kennedy and Newark would open to arriving flights at 6 a.m. Monday, with departures beginning at noon. LaGuardia was to reopen at 7 a.m.

New York City officials said they weren't sure Sunday evening when mass transit would be fully restored after shutting down Saturday. Some local bus service resumed Sunday, and the subways will resume some service Monday, though officials said commuters should expect long lines and long waits. Downed trees and high water still covered commuter train tracks across the region, according to a temporary transit information website offering periodic updates, www.mta.info.

Airline officials said those disruptions would affect their ability to get back into gear.

"It's really dependent upon mass transit and the airport being ready to support the start-up," JetBlue CEO Dave Barger told NBC.

Long-distance bus and train companies also saw lingering effects from Irene, which was downgraded early Sunday from a hurricane to a tropical storm as high winds ebbed.

Greyhound scrubbed bus travel between Richmond, Va., and Boston all weekend. A spokeswoman said buses would begin to roll north out of Richmond Monday morning and the company hoped to be running in New York by midday.

Amtrak said trains from New York to Florida will be canceled Monday, as will the car train between Lorton, Va., and Sanford, Fla. Some lines in North Carolina and Florida will be open.

Amtrak said in a statement Sunday evening that many routes south of Philadelphia will resume operation, while it canceled many trains between New York and points north. The railroad said separately that its inspections are revealing problems with wiring and signals, as well as trees blocking the tracks. Passengers with paid tickets on canceled trains can rebook or receive refunds by calling 800-872-7245 or visiting Amtrak.com.

But United, Continental, Delta, American, JetBlue, Southwest, AirTran and US Airways canceled hundreds of Monday-morning flights to the New York and Boston area.

Airlines said passengers should call ahead and make sure they have a confirmed seat before going to the airport, but the 670 flights that FlightAware said airlines had canceled for Monday is a small share of the nation's daily flights.

Airlines also moved several hundred planes out of the storm's path to avoid damage, which will further slow the return to normal service.

When blizzards hit the East Coast in December and February, it took some passengers days to get home. That could happen again.

Sara Hesselsweet of Norwalk, Conn., and her family were to fly home Sunday from vacation at Lake Tahoe on the California-Nevada border. After their flight was canceled, American Airlines told her it couldn't find seats for her, her husband and 2-year-old son until next Saturday.

So the family decided to fly from Reno, Nev., to Dallas and on to Chicago, where they would rent a car to drive back to Connecticut.

"We checked Philadelphia, D.C., Boston, the Carolinas ? we couldn't get a flight anywhere," said Hesselsweet, sitting amid a pile of carry-on bags in the Reno airport.

In Fairness to Cities

GREENER THAN EVER: City dwellers tend to have smaller carbon footprints?one of the arguments for an evenhanded urban policy. Image: Glen Wexler Gallery Stock

Not long ago New York, Chicago, Boston and Washington, D.C., were poster children for urban decay. But these cities came roaring back: they tapped deep wells of experience in finance, communications and technology to flourish in a globalized world. They illustrate perfectly the power and resilience of the city as brain trust. Although they have their problems, urban areas continue to lure new residents because of the economic, health and educational benefits that accrue from face-to-face social networking. But if cities are so beneficial, then why are U.S. policies stacked against them?

In matters of housing, education, transportation, the environment and social services, existing rules and spending priorities give cities a raw deal. Cheap gas, highway subsides, tax incentives for home ownership, complacency over urban education and the apportionment of legislators all give preferential treatment to suburbs and rural areas. Even national leaders who should be cheerleaders for an evenhanded urban policy have faltered. Barack Obama, the most urban president since Theodore Roosevelt, skewed the stimulus bill toward more dollars for rural America. The five least populated states got twice as much money per capita as the rest.

Antiurban policies hurt denizens not just of downtown urban cores but also of broader metropolitan regions?and, arguably, the nation as a whole. Cities contribute to economic growth out of proportion to their populations. When they are dragged down, everyone pays the price; when they do well, so do their hinterlands. The rebound of Boston, for example, has enriched the entire state of Massachusetts, which depends heavily for its well-being on the new ideas and technologies hatched on the banks of the Charles River.

To be fair, the dividing line between city and suburb is fuzzy, and it would be easy to make too much of the distinction between urban cores and the rest of the country. The real concern is one of imbalance. Analysts have suggested a number of ways to rectify it. First, cap the home mortgage deduction, which represents a subsidy for homeowners (mostly suburban) at the expense of renters (mostly urban). Such a move should be complemented by steps to increase the supply of middle- and low-income apartments in city centers, which have become too expensive for many Americans. Second, raise gas taxes and put in place congestion pricing in urban areas so that society no longer subsidizes driving. These revenues could enhance mass transit, which, despite being more environmentally friendly, now often costs more than driving to work. Third, consider radical steps to fix gargantuan, unwieldy urban school systems saddled with the challenge of educating tens of thousands of rich and poor within their districts. Urban economist Edward Glaeser, who has two articles in this issue, suggests that solutions to such a tall order might come from either the left or right of the political spectrum: a nationwide high-quality school system, as in France, or a serious effort to put in place a voucher system.

Ultimately, the trouble is that the U.S. political system is rigged against densely populated areas. The system of earmarking funds by Congress means that infrastructure money gets allocated based on political horse trading rather than on the demographics of where people actually live and work. Letting the people of Iowa and New Hampshire always go first in the presidential primary season has much to recommend it?the citizens of those states take their privileged role seriously?but it means that candidates have little incentive to speak to urban concerns such as housing policy or decaying infrastructure.

The basic issue is fairness. Why should government policy favor owning over renting, driving over mass transit, or kids in one school district over another? The current incentives encourage people to settle in the outskirts when they might otherwise prefer to live downtown?a bias that makes little sense even when you leave out its environmental costs. And those costs are enormous. To keep our carbon emissions in check, we will need to edge closer to our neighbors. From the perspective both of simple fairness and of rational, science-based public policy, eliminating the incentives for citizens to spread out should be our goal.?

Wealth Creation Becoming Rich & The ... - Personal Finance Solution

This sounds like a peculiar title for an article. What has Wealth Creation got to do with the purpose of life you might ask? I?m gonna argue that it has a lot to do with it. Wealth Creation at its core signifies the creation of something of extended value. It?s amazing how much mediocrity we put up with. We don?t really want to live humdrum lives. We put up with the humdrum just so we can enjoy exciting, meaningful and adventurous episodes in our life.

I like the broader, far-reaching concept of wealth creation much more so than narrow, limited notion of just making money. There is nothing noble in being superior or wealthier than someone else. But there is great nobility and purpose in being superior to your former self.

Simple, seemingly trivial acts like falling in love, dancing, listening to music and so on, I believe, have shared motives with earning more money, building a career, creating wealth i.e. the pursuit and expression of more life. The purpose of life is essentially to create and experience more life ? to enable the true expression of life. Wealth creation in its fullest, broadest meaning fosters this expression.

The Purpose of Life

The meaning of life is that which you give it; but the purpose of life, it could be argued, is something altogether more certain. Your own individual purpose may take time to figure out as you journey through life but in general terms I think it?s fair to say, your purpose is, to transform yourself from who and how you are now, to your next highest ideal of who and how you want to be.

Every parent wants to give their child more and better than they themselves had. This is a natural biological and sociological imperative. Every individual wants to give and have more life than they currently have. The attainment of riches and wealth is simply part of this expression.

Whilst transformation isn?t exclusively the domain of wealth creation?if you are creating more life, creating more value than you will automatically become wealthier. So, in a sense, wealth is a measure of the increased value you create during your life, the depth and fullness of expression in your life and the fostering/creation of more life.

A Broader Definition of Wealth

Whilst wealth is most often associated with money and the accumulation of assets; I see wealth (and its opposite, destitution) as pervasive in everything in life; in people? s mindsets, in the way people behave, in the forces and laws of nature, and in every human interaction. For the purpose of this article, we are largely focused on the definition of wealth creation as associated with money and assets. However, it is worth bearing in mind that wealth is not merely about the accumulation of money and assets but also perhaps a reflection of something deeper, some inner drive and pursuit far nobler than we might think.

So, we don?t have to limit the definition of wealth creation to pure economics. For the purposes of this article, we can say that wealth comes in many different forms. Life is not just about what you have or achieve; it?s also firmly about who and what you become. Perhaps even more importantly who and what other people become as a result of your being.

In a sense, wealth creation is a measure of the length and distance you?ve come in life in all aspects?.personal growth and development, spiritual growth and development etc. Wealth doesn?t just reside in your bank account; it?s in your spirit, your mindset, your behavior and your actions.

The True Purpose of Getting Rich

The reasons for getting rich and wealth creation are much more than the simple attainment of money and wealth. Getting rich enables us to increase life and live more. I believe that one?s desire for wealth and riches is rarely, if ever, specifically about the money, but rather it is a measurable way of expressing our desire for a fuller, better, more meaningful life i.e. the increasing of life.

Personally, I have no interest in money as a means of possession. My wealth creation pursuits are driven by a need to discover more life. Assuming, that your basic Maslow hierarchy of needs are satisfied (food, shelter, sex, love etc)?then the pursuit of money is matched by a pursuit of self-actualization. Continuous advancement and increase in life is what all men and women are seeking. People are attracted to those who can give them more of the means of life and this attraction will result in the creation of wealth and you becoming rich.

Concerning yourself with the attraction of money and wealth as a means to the experiencing and contribution to the extension of life is far more worthy pursuit than the love of money as a possession. What you want for you, you must want for everybody.

Creation Not Competition

It?s called Wealth Creation and not Wealth Competition. We must create rather than compete for what is already created. If you look around you, you will notice that the most successful businesses in the world create value that is hard to compete with. People have a need to be creative and spiritual, rather than destructive and unspiritual. People are therefore attracted to creation. If your business is creative rather than merely competitive it stands a greater chance of success. The people who make the most money in the world are state changers; they create changed states, new experience, and increased experience of life. They essentially give and promote more life. They create more value in life. Wealth creation in its fullest meaning not only creates wealth but also contributes to creation of more life.

That part of us that?s always trying to articulate itself and connect back up with and join with some greater expression of life is a deeply spiritual force of nature that simply must express itself. To deny it, would be denying yourself of who you really are.

Financial Freedom ? An Alternative Perspective

We often associate the expression ?financial freedom? with some notion of limitless wealth and money. However, an alternative perspective on financial freedom is whereby your fullest expression of life is not limited by your financial circumstances. I would argue that, if your present financial circumstances somehow prevent you from allowing the fullest expression of yourself, then you will be driven by the pursuit of financial freedom and the creation of wealth to enable this. You obtain absolute financial freedom when you are certain that you can do virtually whatever you want, whenever you want, with whomever you want, in a way that empowers both you and everyone else.

In Summary

Whether you?re herding goats in the Himalayas, working in a sweet shop on some street corner or trading stocks on Wall Street there?s no getting away from the subject. Wealth creation is everywhere. People may have different ways of describing it (e.g. paying the bills, saving for a rainy day, building wealth, building a future, getting rich, making money, making ends meet, building a nest egg etc) , however, essentially they are different ways of describing the same thing in accordance with your current circumstances. Why not give some thought to why you do what it is you do, what is the connection between your daily money-making pursuits and your deeper life purpose? Wealth creation is at the heart of the very purpose of life?.the true purpose of life is to create yourself as you want to be. The true purpose of wealth creation is to enable this for yourself ?and for everyone else!

(AP) ? Hurricane Irene bore down on a dark and quiet New York early Sunday, bringing winds and rapidly rising seawater that threatened parts of the city. The rumble of the subway system was silenced for the first time in years, the city all but shut down for the strongest tropical lashing since the 1980s.

Irene weakened after landfall over the North Carolina coast Saturday, but it was still a massive storm with sustained winds of up to 80 mph as it approached Manhattan. Even worse, Irene's fury could coincide with a tide that's higher than normal. Water levels were expected to rise as much as 8 feet.

Forecasters said there was a chance a storm surge on the fringes of Lower Manhattan could send seawater streaming into the maze of underground vaults that hold the city's cables and pipes, knocking out power to thousands and crippling the nation's financial capital. Officials' feared water lapping at Wall Street, ground zero and the luxury high-rise apartments of Battery Park City. A tornado warning was briefly issued for the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens early Sunday.

In Times Square, shops boarded up windows and sandbags were stacked outside of stores. Construction at the World Trade Center site came to a standstill.

But taxi cabs were open for business as some residents donned rain gear and headed outside to check the weather or to head home after hotel shifts.

"I have to work. I would lose too much money," said cabbie Dwane Imame, who said he worked through the night. "There have been many people, I have been surprised. They are crazy to be out in this weather."

Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered more than 370,000 people out of low-lying areas, mostly in lower Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. Only 8,700 people checked-in to shelters and an untold number defied the order.

"Oh, forget Bloomberg. We ain't going anywhere," 60-year-old Evelyn Burrus said at a large public housing complex in Brooklyn. "Go to some shelter with a bunch of strangers and bedbugs? No way."

Late Saturday, Bloomberg said it was no longer safe to be outside.

"The time for evacuation is over. Everyone should now go inside and stay inside," he said.

Many New Yorkers took the evacuation in stride. Some planned hurricane parties.

"We already have the wine and beer, and now we're getting the vodka," said Martin Murphy, a video artist who was shopping at a liquor store near Central Park with his girlfriend.

"If it lasts, we have dozens of movies ready, and we'll play charades and we're going to make cards that say, 'We survived Irene,'" he said.

The center of the storm was supposed to pass east of Manhattan about midmorning. The wind and rain wasn't to taper off until Sunday afternoon.

All subway, bus and commuter rail service was shuttered so officials could get equipment safely away from flooding, downed trees or other damage. It was the first time the nation's biggest transit system has shut down because of a natural disaster.

Boilers and elevators also were shut down in public housing in evacuation areas to encourage tenants to leave and to prevent people from getting stuck in elevators if the power went out.

Some hotels also shut off their elevators and air conditioners. Others had generators ready to go.

At a shelter in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn, public housing residents arrived with garbage bags filled with clothing; others pushed carts loaded with their belongings.

Tenants said management got them to leave by telling them the water and power would be shut off.

"For us, it's him," said Victor Valderrama, pointing to his 3-year-old son. "I didn't want to take a chance with my son."

Con Edison brought in hundreds of extra utility workers from around the country. While the foot of Manhattan is protected by a seawall and a network of pumps, Con Ed vice president John Mucci said the utility stood ready to turn off the power to about 17,000 people in the event of severe flooding.

Mucci said it could take up to three days to restore the power if the cables became drenched with saltwater, which can be particularly damaging. The subway system, which carries 5 million passengers on an average weekend, wasn't expected to restart until Monday at the earliest.

The New York Stock Exchange has backup generators and can run on its own, a spokesman said.

Con Ed also shut down about 10 miles of steam pipes underneath the city to prevent explosions if they came in contact with cold water. The shutdown affected 50 commercial and residential customers around the city who use the pipes for heat, hot water and air conditioning.

As Irene passes by, tides are higher than usual. The phenomenon adds about a half a foot to high tides, said Stephen Gill, a scientist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The storm surge was likely to be as much as 4 to 8 feet.

More than 8.3 million people live in New York City, and nearly 29 million in the metropolitan area.

A hurricane warning was issued for the city for the first time since Gloria in September 1985. That storm blew ashore on Long Island with winds of 85 mph and caused millions of dollars in damage, along with one death in New York.

City police rescued two kayakers who capsized in the surf off Staten Island. They were found with their life jackets on, bobbing in the roiling water.

The area's three major airports ? LaGuardia, Kennedy and Newark Liberty ? were closed. With the subways closed, many were left to hail taxis. To encourage cab-sharing and speed the evacuation, passengers were charged not by the mile but by how many different fare "zones" their trip crossed.

Dozens of buses arrived at the Brooklyn Cyclones minor league ballpark in Coney Island to help residents get out. Nursing homes and hospitals were emptied.

At a shelter set up at a high school in the Long Island town of Brentwood, Alexander Ho calmly ate a sandwich in the cafeteria. Ho left his first-floor apartment in East Islip, even though it is several blocks from the water, just outside the mandatory evacuation zone.

"Objects outside can be projected as missiles," he said. "I figured my apartment didn't seem as safe as I thought, as every room has a window."

Libyan forces close in on Gaddafi's home town (Reuters)

TRIPOLI (Reuters) ? Libyan forces closed in on Muammar Gaddafi's home town Sunday, vowing to seize it by force if negotiations failed, and their leaders ruled out any talks with the deposed ruler, other than on the terms of his surrender.

Gaddafi's foes were advancing on his birthplace of Sirte, which straddles the east-west coastal road, but one commander said "liberating" the city could take over 10 days.

Tripoli streets were quiet after sporadic overnight gunfire and explosions in the capital, traumatized by emerging evidence of widespread summary killings that took place during last week's battles to drive Gaddafi out.

But some residents ventured out to hunt for scarce supplies of water, food and fuel. And in Martyrs Square, known as Green Square in the Gaddafi era, traffic police reappeared in crisp white uniforms, directing cars amid a sea of bullet casings.

"I came back to work Friday. Life is beginning to come back to normal," said one policeman, Mahmoud al-Majbary, 49.

Asked if fighters were obeying the traffic police, he said: "Not yet, we're getting there slowly. We're mainly really here to reassure the people that they are safe."

Libyans may remain fearful as long as the man who subjected them to his capricious will for 42 years remains at large.

Gaddafi, 69, has so far evaded capture, perhaps intending to lead an insurgency against his disparate opponents grouped loosely under the National Transitional Council (NTC).

"No negotiation is taking place with Gaddafi," Ali Tarhouni, the NTC official for oil and finance, told Reuters. "If he wants to surrender, then we will negotiate and we will capture him."

The Associated Press earlier quoted Gaddafi's spokesman, Moussa Ibrahim, as saying Gaddafi was still in Libya and wanted to discuss forming a transitional government with the NTC.

NTC officials say the war will go on until Gaddafi is killed or captured and insist that he, his son Saif al-Islam and his spy chief should be tried in Libya, although they are wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity.

VITAL PRIZE

Sirte, 450 km (280 miles) east of Tripoli, is a vital prize for anti-Gaddafi forces attacking from east and west. They say they prefer a negotiated handover, but will fight if need be.

"Our aim isn't bloodshed, our aim is liberation," Colonel Salem Muftah al-Refaidy told Reuters during a visit to the eastern city of Benghazi. "We don't want more bloodshed, especially among the civilians -- children, elderly, women."

He said NTC troops were within 100 km of Sirte from the east and were also approaching from Misrata to the west.

Refaidy said there was no going back to the past. "After all this bloodshed we can't say, 'Come here Muammar, come here Saif -- we're sorry, take Libya'. It's done. Game over."

In Tripoli, residents queued for bread or scoured grocery shops for food. Many took a stoical view of their plight.

"This is a tax we pay for our freedom. We must endure in this transitional period," said Sanusi Idhan, a lawyer waiting to buy food.

Abdel Salam al-Arabi, 56, a bank worker, said things would improve. "I don't think there's a crisis, but we are having problems with petrol and there are some water shortages. Libya will come back. We have experts, we can do it," he said.

Aymen Mohammed was filling plastic containers with water to supply his neighbors. "There are many people here who don't have water so we're filling the bottles from our well," he said.

But the stench of rotting bodies and burning garbage still hangs over the city. More and more bodies have turned up, some of slain Gaddafi soldiers, others victims of summary killings.

The charred remains of 53 people were found in a warehouse in Tripoli, apparently imprisoned opponents of Gaddafi who were executed as his rule collapsed, Britain's Sky News reported on Saturday. It broadcast pictures of a heap of burned skeletons, still smoldering, in the warehouse.

In the Tajoura district of the capital, local people prepared a mass grave for the bodies of 22 African men who appeared to have been recruited to fight for Gaddafi. One of the dead had his hands tied behind his back.

"The rebels asked them to surrender but they refused," said resident Haitham Mohammed Khat'ei.

COLD-BLOODED KILLINGS

Reports of cold-blooded killings by both sides have darkened the atmosphere in a city where many had greeted Gaddafi's fall with joy.

New York-based Human Rights Watch reported that Gaddafi's forces may have executed scores of prisoners and killed civilians as rebels overran the Libyan capital last week.

"The evidence we have been able to gather so far strongly suggests that Gaddafi government forces went on a spate of arbitrary killing as Tripoli was falling," Sarah Leah Whitson, HRW's North Africa director, said in a statement.

In a sign of the lawlessness now gripping parts of the capital, one of Gaddafi's villas lay looted and abandoned, torn pictures of the fugitive leader scattered in its grounds.

The NTC, which has told its fighters not to carry out revenge killings, is trying to assert its authority and restore order in Tripoli but its top officials have yet to move there from their Benghazi headquarters in the east.

The NTC and the Western powers that backed rebel forces with a five-month bombing campaign are acutely aware of the need to prevent Libya collapsing into the kind of chaos that plagued Iraq for years after the U.S.-led invasion of 2003.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague rejected any idea that Gaddafi could be involved in a transition of power, saying this was unacceptable to the NTC and its foreign allies.

"That regime is finished," he told Sky News. "So that just is not on the cards, we are way past that point."

Hague said Britain favored putting Gaddafi on trial at the ICC, but added that his fate was for Libyans to decide.

He urged the former Libyan leader to "tell his remaining forces to lay down their arms, to cease this violence so that other people can take forward Libya into a peaceful future."

Islamists suspected in deadly Nigeria U.N. bombing (Reuters)

ABUJA (Reuters) ? At least 18 people were killed by a car bomb that ripped through the United Nations' building in the Nigerian capital Abuja on Friday -- a rare attack on an international institution in a country wracked by local conflicts.

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said the final casualty toll was likely to be high and Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan ordered tighter security around the capital after what he called a "most despicable assault."

Security sources and witnesses said the car rammed into the building and blew up, badly damaging parts of an office complex where close to 400 people normally work for U.N. agencies.

"This was an assault on those who devote their lives to helping others," Ban said in a statement. "We condemn this terrible act, utterly."

Body parts were strewn on the ground as emergency workers, soldiers and police swarmed around the building, cordoned roads and rushed the wounded to hospital.

"Different people have been taken to different hospitals so we're not sure of casualty figures. It is at least 18," said Mike Zuokumor, Abuja police commissioner.

Norway's government said a Norwegian citizen was among the dead. She was named as Ingrid Midtgaard, a 30-year-old lawyer employed by the United Nations.

"We cannot give an update at the moment, our people are around all the hospitals working hard," a Red Cross spokesman said.

The BBC reported that a spokesman for the Islamist group Boko Haram had said in a phone call that it had carried out the attack. The BBC gave no further details.

It is difficult to get confirmation of attacks by Boko Haram because the group has an ill-defined command structure and a variety of people who speak on its behalf. The police and the government have not said who was responsible.

Speaking before the BBC report, an Abuja-based security source said he suspected Boko Haram, whose strikes have grown in intensity and spread further afield, or al Qaeda's North African arm.

In Friday's attack the car slammed through security gates of the U.N. complex, crashed into the basement and exploded, sending vehicles flying and setting the building ablaze.

"When the car got inside it went straight to the basement and exploded, killing people in reception, right and left," said Abuja resident James John, who saw the attack.

"The entire building, from the ground floor to the topmost, was just fire and smoke. I saw six bodies being carried."

Michael Ocilaje, a U.N. employee at the complex, said: "All the people in the basement were killed. Their bodies are littered all over the place."

The building was blackened from top to bottom. In places, walls were blown away and reduced to rubble.

British Prime Minister David Cameron spoke on Friday to Ban and President Jonathan to pass on his condolences.

"The Prime Minister described it as an appalling attack. He said Britain and Nigeria faced a common threat in Islamic extremism, and offered to do all we could to help find the perpetrators," a British spokesman said.

The Addis Ababa-based African Union condemned what it called "these abhorrent and criminal attacks which cannot be justified under any circumstances."

SIMILAR ATTACK

Militant attacks in the oil-producing regions of southern Nigeria have subsided but the north has been hit by a round of bombings and killings by Islamist extremists.

Boko Haram, whose name translates from the northern Hausa language as "Western education is sinful," has been behind almost daily bombings and shootings, mostly targeting police in the northeast of Africa's most populous nation.

The group claimed responsibility for a June bomb attack on the car park of the Abuja police headquarters which bore similarities to Friday's blast.

In the June attack, a car rammed through the gates of the police headquarters and exploded, killing the bomber and narrowly missing the chief of police.

Boko Haram's ambitions are growing and if it is confirmed to be responsible for Friday's attack, this would mark a shift beyond domestic targets.

In London, Henry Wilkinson of Janusian risk consultants, told Reuters: "This attack will prompt many Western organizations and business to reassess the threat the group poses."

"The targeting of the U.N. building indicates a more global outlook probably influenced by al Qaeda ideology."

In Abuja President Jonathan ordered tighter security.

"The President believes that the attack is a most despicable assault on the United Nations' objectives of global peace and security, and the sanctity of human life to which Nigeria wholly subscribes," a government statement said.

Security sources and diplomats are concerned that Boko Haram has links with more organized groups outside Nigeria.

These include Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb which operates over the border in Niger and has kidnapped foreign workers there. It was also suspected of kidnapping a Briton and an Italian in Nigeria earlier this year.

In December 2007, a car bombing at the U.N. building in Algiers killed at least 41 people. In 2003, 15 staff and seven others were killed by a bomb attack at the U.N. building in Baghdad.

Essay: Filmmakers struggled with towers after 9/11 (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? On Sept. 11, 2001, I was living in New York, covering entertainment and reviewing films for The Associated Press. I had a typically random, frivolous day planned: a screening of "The Glass House"; an interview with Carson Daly; and a hair appointment to get my highlights touched up.

None of that happened.

But I'll never forget the title of the movie that was in my calendar that day, a thriller starring Leelee Sobieski. For many of us critics, "The Glass House" ended up being the first movie we saw once we struggled to return to reality after the attacks, and its manufactured scares seemed so cheap and crass compared to the real horrors we'd all just witnessed.

Approaching entertainment in general, and movies specifically ? especially those set and shot in New York with images of the twin towers ? was a tricky proposition in the weeks and months following 9/11. There was, of course, the broader question: When is it appropriate to enjoy ourselves again? But studios debated how to be respectful in releasing films that featured images of those iconic, fallen buildings. They wanted to strike the right tone, but there didn't seem to be a right answer.

The twin towers were so instantly recognizable, so majestic and evocative. In a movie such as "Working Girl," they're a beacon of promise; in the classic poster for Woody Allen's "Manhattan," they even form the letter H. Do you eradicate them entirely to avoid upsetting the audience? Or do you leave them in, because they existed when the film was being made?

"Glitter" is probably best-known now as a laughably self-serving star vehicle for Mariah Carey. But it happened to come out just 10 days after the terrorist attacks, and included a couple of shots in which the twin towers are visible in the background. At a screening in a Times Square multiplex, those images drew the only cheers and applause.

Then there was the comedy "Zoolander," directed by and starring Ben Stiller, which came out Sept. 28. The towers were erased from the finished print, which was jarring. A scene in which Derek Zoolander gives the eulogy at a funeral for his male model roommates, who die in a gasoline explosion inexplicably played for laughs, also struck an awkward note, especially with the New York City skyscrapers gleaming behind the cemetery.

The romantic comedy "Serendipity," starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale, was released less than a month after 9/11, but it takes place in a Manhattan that is so idyllic, so romantic, it probably never existed. Shots of the World Trade Center in a version that screened at the Toronto International Film Festival were excised after the attacks for maximum movie-going happiness.

Meanwhile, Arnold Schwarzenegger's "Collateral Damage" was postponed from an October 2001 release to the following February; even though it takes place in Los Angeles, it's about a terrorist plot to blow up buildings. It was the most high-profile example of Hollywood's attempt to be sensitive, even though "Collateral Damage" was, in retrospect, just another big, loud, dumb Schwarzenegger movie.

But as time went on, filmmakers began feeling their way around the tragedy with what appeared to be a bit more comfort and confidence. The police drama "City by the Sea," starring Robert De Niro and James Franco, came out on Sept. 6, 2002. It had been filmed all over New York City in early 2001 and contains several prominent images of the World Trade Center towers. This struck a somber chord upon the one-year anniversary of the attacks, a time when the city collectively was on edge once more, and sent a ripple through the screening I attended. Still, I was glad to see the towers remain in the film, because that was an accurate reflection of what the city looked like during production.

A few months later, we had "25th Hour," one of my favorite movies of that year and one of Spike Lee's best. Naturally, being a filmmaker who personifies New York, Lee wouldn't dream of avoiding the attacks. His unflinching title sequence focuses on the downtown skyline as it appeared around the one-year anniversary, with two beams of light stretching skyward from the spot where the towers had stood.

Later, Edward Norton's character visits his father at the bar he owns in Staten Island ? a firefighter hangout with memorials on the walls to the men who died. And Barry Pepper and Philip Seymour Hoffman have a long conversation in front of a picture window in Pepper's high-rise apartment, which overlooks ground zero. Hoffman asks whether Pepper plans to move, since the air quality downtown is so bad.

"(Bleep) that, man," Pepper responds. "Bin Laden could drop in next door ? I ain't movin'."

Five years after the attacks, Oliver Stone approached the towers head-on with "World Trade Center," starring Nicolas Cage and Michael Pena as a pair of Port Authority police officers trapped beneath the rubble of the collapsed towers. The prevailing wisdom was that Stone would inject some pointed political perspective in depicting this tragedy; instead, he offered an exceptionally crafted, strongly acted, high-end made-for-TV movie. It's visceral and intense, exceedingly faithful in its depiction of the fear and chaos, the ash and smoke that enveloped New York that day.

Eventually, the buildings again became a welcome sight. James Marsh's Oscar-winning documentary "Man on Wire" (2008) traces tightrope-walker Philippe Petit's death-defying high-wire act between the World Trade Center towers in 1974.

The film is hugely engrossing, but it also harkens to a simpler, more innocent time. A skywalk such as the one Petit pulled off would be impossible today; security is too tight and too pervasive in every segment of our daily lives. And that's because of what happened on Sept 11, 2001 ? a date that never arises in "Man on Wire" because Marsh wisely realizes he doesn't need to mention it. The absence of the towers ? and the reason for their absence ? is implicit throughout the film, which adds a level of unspoken yet inescapable poignancy.
