Stephen Fry Joins 'The Hobbit'

SYDNEY -- Stephen Fry is joining the cast of The Hobbit.

Director Peter Jackson said Thursday on his Facebook page that the British actor and comedian will play the Master of Laketown, who is essentially the mayor of Esgaroth.

Jackson also confirmed that he and Fry are developing a remake of classic World War II movie, The Dambusters. Fry joins an expanding cast of U.K. actors starring in the two Hobbit films.

?We are thrilled to confirm that Stephen Fry will be playing The Master of Laketown,? Jackson posted. ?I've known Stephen for several years, and we're developing a Dambuteres movie together. In addition to his writing skills, he's a terrific actor and will create a very memorable Master for us?.

At the same time it was announced that Ryan Gage will play the Master's conniving civil servant, Alfrid, while Game of Thrones cast member Conan Stevens, who plays the Mountain That Rides in the HBO series, has been cast as an Orc called Azog.

The new casting announcements come as cast and crew prepare to take a break in three weeks with editing and visual effects work to be done.

That will allow key cast to meet some of their other filming commitments including Martin Freeman (Bilbo Baggins), who has already returned to the U.K. to film another telemovie in the hit BBC franchise Sherlock.?
