Is it rude not to attend a family baby shower? | ADHK Kids Blog

Is it rude not to attend a family baby shower?
I have been invited to a family baby shower. I do not have any rifts with my extended family, I love them. I do not want to attend, mainly because I have a small child and prefer to spend the precious weekend time with my immediate family. Is it rude not to go? I would of course send a card and gift.

My mom thinks it is wrong not to attend. I am not being spiteful, I just don?t get much alone time and if I do get it, I would prefer to ?spend? it differently?not with 30-40 women eating food and playing games. The time I would get with the Mom-to-be would be minimal, I am sure, with so many people there.

I totally understand that if you are throwing to party, you get to decide the dreaded ?kids or no kids? thing, but I also feel that I should be free to decide to not go if my child is excluded. (for the record, I have a very well behaved sweet little girl.. I have read some of the posts about ?wild kids? at baby showers!!).

I don?t want to be rude, I am just confused if there are obligations to attend every family event!

So, in summary, is it rude just to say ?no????
Thank you everyone for input. It was an interesting gathering of ideas ? many of my own inner thoughts. I feel a little bad not going, and maybe it is a little selfish, but I really like to be with my husband and child on the weekends! I will make sure to include a nice note and good wishes to the mom-to-be! Thanks, again!

It may be?. Maybe you could attend, give your gift & card in person and apologize and leave after a few minutes and say you have an appointment or have to get home! At least you showed up and gave the gift in person, Its a little more polite then just sending it I think?..

invitations are not obligations. feel free to accept or deny for whatever reason, as long as you reply to the hostess.

if you are close to this family member, explain in your card that you?re sorry that you?re unable to attend, but you?re wishing her well. maybe offer her some advice since you?ve already got your hands full with your kids!

you could just send a card and gift with another attending person, no biggie.
