SEATTLE (Reuters) ? A man accused of opening fire on his estranged wife, her boyfriend and five others in a crowded casino nightclub near Seattle was ordered held on $1 million bond on Monday to face charges of attempted murder.
During a 10-minute court hearing, King County District Judge David Christie said he found "sufficient evidence for probable cause" to order the bond for Cesar Chaparro, 42, suspected in a shooting rampage that left seven people wounded early on Sunday.
Chaparro was charged with four counts of first-degree attempted murder in connection with the four victims most seriously wounded, including his estranged spouse, her sister and another woman who were initially hospitalized in critical condition. A second sister also was shot.
Prosecutors said they would continue to review the case before deciding what additional charges may apply.
The judge also issued a court order barring the defendant from further contact with his wife or the other victims.
Chaparro is accused of walking into the Muckleshoot Casino's Club Galaxy lounge in Auburn, Washington, about 30 miles east of Seattle, and opening fire on his wife and her companion at close range as they danced together.
Security officers managed to tackle the gunman and wrestle the pistol away from him, according to court documents filed in the case.
The documents say Chaparro later told investigators he had followed his wife to the club and stated that he "couldn't stand it" when he saw her there with her new boyfriend.
Wearing maroon-colored jail clothing and sandals, Chaparro said nothing during the hearing. A court-ordered interpreter translated the proceedings in Spanish for the defendant. Chaparro of Covington, Washington, has been separated from his wife since December, Auburn Police Commander Mike Hirman told Reuters.
