Newswire / Gratuity a Major Concern when Travelling Abroad Reveals ...

The latest survey from leading car rental rate comparator Carrentals.co.uk has discovered that UK travellers are particularly worried about the etiquette surrounding tips and gratuity when travelling in other countries.

It is hard to find a society these days which does not incorporate tipping into its wage scale, but there are still a few places where waiters don?t expect to receive anything. The percentage of gratuity is also an issue, as it is definitely not a universal amount. Add to that the oblique service charge that appears on the bill at certain restaurants and it?s hard to know sometimes what the staff expect from their customers.

From a survey of more than 1,000 customers, Carrentals.co.uk found out that these very concerns were at the heart of most travellers? worries when preparing for a trip to a new country. More than anything, people want to know when to tip and how much. This includes everyone from the hotel bellhop to the taxi driver or restaurant hostess.

Gareth Robinson, Managing Director of Carrentals.co.uk, comments: ?The results of our newest questionnaire reveal a real need for specific travel information on an individual country basis. To help customers prepare best for their trip abroad our car hire booking site will soon feature a useful information section dedicated to things like tipping.?

?What was interesting to me was that people weren?t particularly worried about legalities or the details of major festivals in their travel destinations. Their concerns were about more personal situations that could prove potentially embarrassing like forgetting to leave a tip. In America, this is often the problem as waiters there regularly receive tips of 20% of the bill?s total. If you leave them 10% it?s actually considered an insult.?
