A SPECIAL two-day course is being run in Hartlepool to enable people to qualify as football referees.

It will take place over two full days on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd April at Grayfields Sports Pavilion. Participants will also be required to attend an induction evening at Grayfields on Tuesday 10th April from 6pm to 7.30pm.

The course covers a number of modules including:

* A pre-course booklet and DVD on the laws of the game to be studied prior to the course.
* A Criminal Records Bureau check
* Attending a Safeguarding Children Workshop
* Attendance at the referee training course
* Completion of six 11-a-side matches
* Attendance at a subsequent training evening

The course costs a total of ?95 for ages 16 and over and ?70 for under 16s, including the FA CRB check and the annual referee affiliation fee. Places are limited to 20 and must be booked in advance.

Daniel Garthwaite, the Council's Assistant Recreation Officer, said: "We do a lot of work with local football groups and clubs and from that it has become clear that there is a very limited number of qualified referees in Hartlepool.

"This is an excellent opportunity for local clubs to have their own qualified referee but I would urge them not to delay as there is a limited number of places which are being allocated on a first-come, first-served basis."
