What the World Looks Like From a Football's Point of View

February 27, 2013 5:43 PM Text Size: A . A . A With the dozens of camera angles used to show a football game on TV, why hasn't anyone ever thought of giving us a ball's-eye view? Because with the spheroid spiraling at speeds up to 600 rpm, a football-cam would produce unwatchable, nauseating footage.

But what if it didn't? Imagine the footage a football would capture if it flew down the gridiron without spinning. That's what researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Electro-Communications in Tokyo have developed, using an algorithm that analyzes frames shot by a football's built-in camera as it spirals across the field. By looking for shots of the sky, the algorithm selects and deletes all frames captured while the camera faces skyward. It then stiches together the downward shots into a panorama. The resulting video (below) is still a little twitchy, but researchers think they'll soon be able to produce instant videos with smooth, wide shots of the football field streaking by below.

Project leader Kris Kitani told PM that the algorithm was the easy part. "There's already been a lot of work on image stitching and making panoramas from multiple small images," he says, "so I just used all of that well known technology." He spent much more time prototyping the camera, which began as a spongy volleyball with a USB camera in it that Kitani rolled down a track. Eventually it became a Nerf ball with a GoPro inside. Next, Kitani hopes to see what he can do with multiple cameras inside a single ball.

Kitani was surprised to find inspiration in a 1938 Popular Mechanics article featuring a 16-millimeter film camera mounted within a balsa wood football. "When we initially started the work I did what every researcher does," Kitani says. "I went and Googled ?ball and camera' and saw what came out. When I saw the Popular Mechanics article, I was like, woah, someone already did this!" (You're welcome, Kris, though I doubt the video quality of our 1938 effort matches yours.)

Kitani says project is just one of a growing number of endeavors in the field of digital sports. "Digital sports is an area of research concerned with how technology can be combined with sports to do different things? like augment spectator experience, analyze the activities of athletes, and even create entirely new games and sports that weren't possible before." Expanding your field of vision isn't the only way to change sport spectatorship. Kitani also wants to develop a sensor to detect a football's moment of impact, which could send a signal to your cell phone to make it vibrate. "Kind of like the vibrating chairs at Universal Studios."

You can see the BallCam in action below, but heads up: The video shows both the finished product and the spinning raw footage, so it might cause dizziness.

3-D computing prototype puts your hands inside the screen

Attendees of the latest TED conference got a look at a futuristic device called SpaceTop where the user views a 3-D workspace through a transparent display, manipulating the on-screen elements with just their hands. It won't be on shelves any time soon, but it does pique the imagination.

The demonstration was by Jinha Lee, an MIT graduate student who undertook an internship at Microsoft's Applied Science group to develop a 3-D desktop. Part of that project was creating a new method for users to interact with the computer.

Mice and touchscreens, of course, really only let one interact along two dimensions ? you can scroll left, right, up, and down, but going in and out must be done with 2-D gestures like pinches, whereas in real life you would just move your hand forward or back.

Lee's work focused on creating an interface though which one could move one's hand naturally and interact with familiar elements like windows and documents. The result is still rather rough, but it's promising.

The transparent display is equipped with a camera that tracks the user's head and adjusts the perspective on the 3-D desktop "under" it. Meanwhile, a second camera watches the user's hands and determines their position in three dimensions.

While it's still limited to a few demo applications, it's fascinating to watch: Grabbing a file from a stack is as easy as plucking it out, and when you need to type, just drop your hands onto the built-in keyboard.

Among the many challenges of developing such a system is that there is essentially no software written for it. Every operating system with which an average user might be familiar is built around the idea of a flat display navigated by a mouse or touchscreen. So Lee's had to be built from scratch.

As such, it's still very much just a concept or work in progress. His original work was done in late 2011, and the "core design and framework" were presented at Microsoft's TechForum in 2012. But this week's TED demonstration was much farther along and the first time it has been shown so publicly.

Whether this kind of interaction becomes commonplace or not (devices like the Oculus Rift and Leap Motion also present alternative input methods and are farther along in development), it's still a thrill to see something like this that seems to be science fiction made fact.

Little telescope to hunt big game: hard-to-see near-Earth asteroids

Canada's NEOSSat space telescope was launched Monday atop an Indian rocket. It will monitor two groups of asteroids whose proximity to the sun makes them hard to see from Earth.

Housed in a spacecraft the size of a large suitcase, the space telescope physically is a munchkin among behemoths. Its light-gathering mirror is only about 6 inches across.

But from its orbit nearly 500 miles above Earth, NEOSSat will be able to view faint near-Earth asteroids in a region of space that is tough for terrestrial telescopes to tackle.

The $25 million NEOSSat mission is one of seven satellites the Indian Space Agency lofted Monday aboard a single rocket launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Center, some 50 miles north of Chennal, on India's east coast.

Ground stations have made contact with NEOSSat, "and the basics are green," says Alan Hildebrand, a researcher at the University of Calgary in Alberta and the project's lead scientist.

To date, astronomers say they have discovered between 90 and 95 percent of the approximately 1,000 near-Earth asteroids estimated to be larger than half a mile across.

In 2005, Congress instructed NASA to hunt for smaller asteroids ? setting a goal of finding 90 percent of near-Earth asteroids 500 feet wide and larger by 2020.

But as the Chelyabinsk asteroid demonstrated on Feb. 15, objects far smaller can inflict damage. At about 55 feet across, and with a mass estimated at 10,000 tons, the asteroid exploded high over the Ural mountains. The shock waves damaged an estimated 4,300 buildings and injured nearly 1,500 people.

With tens of millions of objects this size orbiting the sun, the recurrence rate for collisions with a Chelyabinsk-like object averages once every 100 years, according to Paul Chodas, with NASA's Near-Earth Objects Program Office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

French in tough fight in northern Mali

PARIS (AP) ? France's defense minister said Tuesday that French troops are involved in "very violent fighting" in the mountains of northern Mali and that it's too early to talk about a quick pullout from the West African country, despite the growing cost of the intervention.

The fighting against Islamic extremists in the Adrar des Ifoghas mountains has been going on for days. A clash in the area killed 23 soldiers from neighboring Chad on Friday, according to a letter from French President Francois Hollande expressing condolences to his Chadian counterpart.

Soldiers from Chad and a few other African countries have joined the French-led operation to help Mali's weak military push back extremists who had imposed harsh rule on northern Mali and started moving toward the capital last month.

On Tuesday, the Obama administration imposed sanctions on an Islamic rebel leader whose extremist group seized much of northern Mali last year and prompted the French military intervention. The U.S. State Department designated Iyad Ag Ghali, head of the Islamic group Ansar Dine, a global terrorist. The action blocks any assets he holds in the U.S. and prohibits Americans from doing business with him.

The U.N. also added Ag Ghali to its global sanctions list.

Ag Ghali's armed extremists conquered much of northern Mali after a military coup in Mali's capital, aided by al-Qaida's North Africa wing. In Timbuktu, he imposed strict Shariah law and forced thousands to flee; others were tortured and executed. But the French-led intervention in January has turned the tide, forcing back Ag Ghali's rebels to mountainous hideouts near the Algeria border.

French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on France's RTL radio Tuesday that the French intervention in Mali has cost more than ?100 million ($133 million) since it started Jan. 11.

In the first weeks of the campaign, French and Malian forces easily took back cities in northern Mali. But the fighting is rougher now that it has reached more remote terrain in the mountains of the southern Sahara.

"We are now at the heart of the conflict," in protracted fighting in the Adrar des Ifoghas mountains, Le Drian said. While some have suggested starting a pullout of the 4,000-strong French force next month, Le Drian said he couldn't talk about a quick withdrawal while the mountain fighting goes on.

Hollande's letter to Chadian President Idriss Deby said the deaths of Chadian soldiers "illustrate the dangers of this mission." It gave no details. The Chadian army had initially said that 13 soldiers and 65 Islamic extremist rebels were killed in the fighting Friday.

At the United Nations in New York, a top U.N. humanitarian official said Tuesday that as security improves in Mali, the world must seize the moment to deliver much-needed humanitarian aid.

John Ging, a senior humanitarian affairs official who just visited Mali, said that country's northern region is stabilizing but needs help re-opening schools, markets and health clinics. The U.N. is appealing for $373 million in aid, but has only received $17 million.

Even before fighting erupted last year among government forces, Taureg rebels and radical Islamists, Ging said Mali was suffering from the severe food crisis that has hit Africa's arid Sahel region.

Ging said more than 430,000 Malians have been displaced.

Powers to offer Iran sanctions relief at nuclear talks

ALMATY (Reuters) - Major powers will offer Iran some sanctions relief during talks in Almaty, Kazakhstan, this week if Tehran agrees to curb its nuclear program, a U.S. official said on Monday.

But the Islamic Republic could face more economic pain if it fails to address international concerns about its atomic activities, the official said ahead of the February 26-27 meeting in the central Asian state, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"There will be continued sanctions enforcement ... there are other areas where pressure can be put," the official said, on the eve of the first round of negotiations between Iran and six world powers in eight months.

A spokesman for European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who leads the talks with Iran on behalf of the powers, said Tehran should understand that there was an "urgent need to make concrete and tangible progress" in Kazakhstan.

Both Russia and the United States stressed there was not an unlimited amount of time to resolve a dispute that has raised fears of a new war in the Middle East.

"The window for a diplomatic solution simply cannot by definition remain open forever. But it is open today. It is open now," U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said in London.

"There is still time but there is only time if Iran makes the decision to come to the table and negotiate in good faith," he added in a news conference in London. "We are prepared to negotiate in good faith, in mutual respect, in an effort to avoid whatever terrible consequences could follow failure."

It was not clear what he meant by "terrible consequences." Top U.S. officials have repeatedly said the United States will not take any options off the table, code for the possibility of a military strike. They also fear Iran's getting a nuclear weapon could set off an arms race across the Middle East.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said there was "no more time to waste", Interfax news agency quoted him as saying in Almaty.

The immediate priority for the powers - the United States, Russia, China, Germany, Britain and France - is to convince Iran to halt its higher-grade enrichment, which is a relatively short technical step away from potential atom bomb material.

Iran, which has taken steps over the last year to expand its uranium enrichment activities in defiance of international demands to scale it back, wants a relaxation of increasingly harsh sanctions hurting its lifeline oil exports.

Western officials say the Almaty meeting is unlikely to produce any major breakthrough, in part because Iran's presidential election in June may make it difficult for it to make significant concessions before then for domestic reasons.

But they say they hope that Iran will take their proposals seriously and engage in negotiations to try to find a diplomatic settlement.

"No one is expecting to walk out of here with a deal but ... confidence building measures are important," one senior Western official said.

The stakes are high: Israel, assumed to be the Middle East's only nuclear-armed arsenal, has strongly hinted at possible military action to prevent its old foe from obtaining such arms. Iran has threatened to retaliate if attacked.

GOLD SANCTIONS RELIEF?

The U.S. official said the powers' updated offer to Iran - a modified version of one rejected by Iran in the unsuccessful talks last year - would take into account its recent nuclear advances, but also take "some steps in the sanctions arena".

This would be aimed at addressing some of Iran's concerns, the official said, while making clear it would not meet Tehran's demand of an easing of all punitive steps against it.

"We think ... there will be some additional sanctions relief" in the powers' revised proposal," the official said, without giving details.

Western diplomats have told Reuters the six countries will offer to ease sanctions on trade in gold and precious metals if Iran closes its Fordow underground uranium enrichment plant.

Iran has indicated, however, that this will not be enough.

Tehran denies Western allegations it is seeking to develop the capability to make nuclear bombs, saying its program is entirely peaceful. It wants the powers to recognize what it sees as its right to refine uranium for peaceful purposes.

The U.S. official said the powers hoped that the Almaty meeting would lead to follow-up talks soon.

"We are ready to step up the pace of our meetings and our discussions," the official said, adding the United States would also be prepared to hold bilateral talks with Tehran if it was serious about it.

Ashton's spokesman, Michael Mann, said the updated offer to Iran was "balanced and a fair basis" for constructive talks.

The story of a man, his wallet, and $800

Three years ago, trash collector Harold Walls lost his wallet, which held $800. Turns out, though, the wallet wasn't really lost?it was on vacation. And thanks to a good Samaritan, Walls finally has it back.

DelawareOnline.com has the full story. Walls had assumed he dropped his wallet while collecting trash one morning. He and his partner retraced their steps. Alas, no luck.

"I wrote it off, honestly," Walls told DelawareOnline.com of the wallet and money, which he'd planned to use to buy a TV. "Ain't no sense in harping about it or crying over spilled milk. Keep moving."

In 2012, the truck Walls and his partner used was retired by the city and sold at auction to a farmer up in Maine. The farmer took apart the bench seat in the truck's cab and, lo and behold, he found the long-missing wallet. The farmer mailed it back to Walls, cash included.

"I was real surprised it came back with everything. ... It happens to restore a lot of faith that there are still some good people out there," Walls said.

It also serves as a good reminder: If you're missing something, check underneath the cushions.

Samsung to introduce 'the next Galaxy' on March 14

"Ready 4 the show," an invitation sent to members of the press teases, blatantly hinting that we'll be seeing the Galaxy S 4 ? the highly anticipated follow-up to the Galaxy S III smartphone ? at the event being held by Samsung on March 14.

The event will take place in New York City at 7 p.m. ET. (We'll be there to cover it live, of course.)

The Galaxy S 4 ? we're assuming by the big "4" that the only change to Samsung's incredibly consistent naming approach will be to drop the Roman numerals ? will be the company's newest flagship device.

A poster spotted by AnandTech's Brian Klug during a visit to Samsung's demo room at the Consumer Electronics Show in early January suggests that the Galaxy S 4 could be rocking a 4.99-inch 1080p screen with a whopping 440 pixels per inch. While the iPhone 5 offers the significantly less dense 326 ppi, it's worth noting that it's practically impossible for human eyes to tell the difference. After a certain point, the individual pixels simply become indistinguishable.

That's about all we know (or think we know) about the Galaxy S 4 for now, so Samsung could have plenty of surprises waiting up its sleeves come March 14.

Want more tech news or interesting links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on Twitter, subscribing to her Facebook posts, or circling her on Google+.

Samsung Galaxy Xcover 2 hands-on: a ruggedized smartphone with Android Jelly Bean onboard

Samsung Galaxy Xcover 2 handson

It's gotten a bit drowned out in all the Note 8.0 fanfare, but there's another notable member of Samsung's Galaxy being shown off here at MWC 2013: the Xcover 2. Announced late this past January, the Android Jelly Bean (4.1.2) handset is a 4-inch ruggedized device made for active lifestyles. To that end, it bears IP certification for dust- and water-proofing (up to 30 minutes at a depth of one meter). Understandably, its spec load is modest, with a dual-core 1GHz processor (unspecified), 1GB RAM, 800 x 480 display, 4GB storage (expandable via microSD) and 1,700mAh battery.

Since the Xcover 2's meant to be taken outdoors, its body is rife with notches and grips -- so it won't slip out of your hand. The dimpled plastic back, similar to that on the Galaxy Nexus -- has a wrap-around illusion and can only be pried off by turning the lock at its base. Ports for microSD, SIM and 3.5mm headphone jack are all covered by protective flaps, as you'd imagine.

We couldn't get confirmation on the exact CPU inside the Xcover 2, but take our word for it: performance is sluggish. Effect any of the hard Android navigation keys on the bottom and you'll notice a bit of lag before the OS kicks into action. It's to be expected for a device of this nature -- most users eyeing the Xcover 2 likley aren't keen on top-end specs and high-performance. Samsung still hasn't clarified just where or when we'll be seeing the handset crop up, so stay tuned. In the meanwhile, check out our gallery below and brief video demo after the break.

Gas prices spike across California

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- It's still February, but California gas prices are springing forward.

The average price of gasoline in the region saw one of the largest one-month leaps since 2000, the Automobile Club of Southern California said Friday. Statewide, the average price of regular gasoline was $4.22, up 12 cents from last week.

Gas prices have spiked between 57 and 59 cents over the past 30 days. The region's largest increase was 70 cents between May and June 2008.

Auto Club officials said the surge can't be attributed to a single factor, but refineries were expected to undergo a heavy maintenance schedule, and large amounts of money have been plowed into contracts speculating that the price of gas and oil will go up.

Californians, however, are used to seeing a hefty price at the pump and might be resigned to paying $4 or more for a gallon of gas.

"We've done this before," said Auto Club spokeswoman Marie Montgomery. "It's definitely not good for consumers."

Last year, for instance, Californians were paying more than $4 a gallon, but there was a slower rise in prices.

Prices in Southern California now nearly match the highest cost for a gallon in the nation, which can be found on Maui. The average price of regular gasoline in the Los Angeles area was $4.316 per gallon Friday; the price in Wailuku, Hawaii, was $4.399.

The price in Los Angeles is 11.3 cents more than last week and 57 cents higher than last month. In San Diego, the average price is $4.285, which is an increase of 10.2 cents from last week and 58 cents from last month.

In San Francisco, the price is $4.22. A week ago, it was $4.08. That price has gone up 56 cents from a month ago.

Montgomery said she bought gas Thursday, and even after a discount, she paid $4.08 per gallon.

"And I should be happy with that?" she said, laughing. "It's frustrating."

Castleford by-election winner in jobs pledge

By-election winner Richard Forster has pledged to tackle the problem of escalating long-term youth unemployment in Castleford.

Coun Forster, who held the Castleford Central and Glasshoughton Ward for Labour in Thursday?s Wakefield Council by-election, said he will be seeking to increase training opportunities for youngsters. The seat was left vacant after West Yorkshire?s newly-elected Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Burns-Williamson fulfilled his pledge to resign his seat as a councillor on Wakefield Council.

Mr Burns-Williamson, who was a Labour councillor for the Castleford and Glasshoughton ward for almost 15 years, announced his intention to resign after being elected as crime chief last November.

Coun Forster romped home for Labour in the by-election after winning 1,567 of the total 2,045 votes cast following a poor turn out of just 16.93 per cent.

UKIP candidate Nathan Garbutt won 349 votes while Conservative candidate Annemarie Glover recorded 95 votes and Liberal Democrat candidate Mark Goodair won just 33 votes.

Long-term youth unemployment across the Pontefract, Castleford and Hemsworth area has rocketed by up to 500 per cent in the last 12 months. Office for National Statistics figures show the number of youngsters out of work in Pontefract and Castleford increased from 35 in December 2011 to 190 in December last year.

Married father-of-two Coun Forster, 57, who works as a director of a housing association, said: ?I am going to try to increase the opportunities for training and make sure that schools link in with businesses in communities to make sure there are opportunities for work placements so children?s aspirations are going to be increased.

?They will have had the experiences in work placements that currently is quite limited. I want to work with small and medium-sized businesses to increase the opportunities for work placements for young people in schools.

?I want to make sure we have got a workforce that is trained and ready for any opportunities that we can bring in to the town.

Coun Forster added: ?I was born and have been bred in Castleford and I want to make Castleford a thriving town in the wider Wakefield district.?

Painting asteroids could nudge them away from Earth

To protect Earth from space rock threat, a scientist recommended spray painting an asteroid to alter the amount of sunlight reflected by it, thereby changing its trajectory.

The dramatic space rock events of last week highlighted the need in many people's minds for a viable asteroid-deflection strategy, and one scientist thinks he has a good candidate ? paint.

It's a plan to deflect a killer asteroid by using paint, and the science behind it is absolutely rock solid, so to speak, so much so that NASA is getting involved and wants to know much more.

On Friday (Feb. 15), the 130-foot (40 meters)?asteroid 2012 DA14?gave Earth a historically close shave, missing the planet by just 17,200 miles (27,000 kilometers). Hours earlier, a 55-foot (17 m) object exploded over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk, damaging thousands of buildings and injuring 1,200 people.

The?asteroid?encounters served as a reminder that Earth sits in the middle of a cosmic shooting gallery, scientists say, and that destructive impacts are inevitable in the future unless humanity takes action.

One form of action could involve dusting a threatening asteroid with a thin coat of paint. The paint would change the amount of sunlight reflected by the space rock, potentially nudging it away from Earth through the accumulated push provided by many thermal photons as they radiate from the asteroid's surface. (This force is called the Yarkovsky effect, after the Russian engineer who first described it around the turn of the 20th century.) [Photos: Asteroids in Deep Space]

The scheme would use powdered paint, which the sun's rays would then cure into a smooth coating. The paint would probably have to be applied long before any potential impact ? years or decades, perhaps ? to give the Yarkovsky effect enough time to make a difference.

"I have to admit the concept does sound strange, but the odds are very high that such a plan would be successful and would be relatively inexpensive," Dave Hyland, of Texas A&M?University, said in a statement. "The science behind the theory is sound. We need to test it in space."

NASA is interested in Hyland's idea and has approached the researcher to discuss developing such a space test, Texas A&M officials said.

Hyland is not the only scientist who thinks paint could save Earth from a cataclysmic impact. Last year, an MIT graduate?student?proposed launching a spacecraft that would?bombard a threatening asteroid with paint-filled pellets. The idea won the 2012 Move an Asteroid Technical Paper Competition, which was sponsored by the United Nations' Space Generation Advisory Council.

Whatever?deflection strategies?researchers devise, the first step toward safeguarding the Earth is to detect and map the orbits of potentially hazardous objects, Hyland said. One million or more asteroids are thought to lurk in near-Earth space, but just 9,600 of them have been discovered to date.

"The smaller ones like DA14 are not discovered as soon as others, and they could still cause a lot of damage should they hit Earth," Hyland said. Watch live: Vice President Joe Biden to speak today in Connecticut at conference on gun violence

DANBURY ? Vice President Joe Biden spoke Thursday at a gun violence conference a few miles from the scene of last year's Newtown school shooting massacre.

Watch live:?Connecticut Network is streaming video from the conference, which is set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The conference, in Danbury, is to push President Barack Obama's gun control proposals. It was organized by members of the state's congressional delegation including U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, who said the proximity to Newtown was of "symbolic significance."

"There will be people with enormous expertise speaking but also Connecticut and Newtown residents who have felt the full burden and brunt of this horrific tragedy," Blumenthal said.

Other officials including U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan also were scheduled to address the conference at Western Connecticut State University.

Obama is pushing for universal background checks for gun owners, a ban on military-style assault weapons and limiting the size of ammunition magazines.

There is a planned panel discussion on gun violence. A second panel was to discuss mental health and school safety initiatives.

Related: Malloy reveals 'common sense' gun violence prevention proposal

Gun makers and lobbyists weren't invited to participate in the conference, but Blumenthal said gun rights advocates will have opportunities in hearings and other forums to express their points of view. Continued...

Meanwhile, the mother of a 7-year-old girl killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre urged lawmakers at the conference to pass meaningful laws to help prevent another tragedy, winning a standing ovation as officials vowed to act.

Chris and Lynn McDonnell, whose daughter Grace was among 20 first graders and six educators killed in December, spoke Thursday in Danbury.

"We ask our representatives to look into their hearts and remember the 26 beautiful lives we lost and pass meaningful laws to help prevent this from happening again," Lynn McDonnell said, sparking a standing ovation.

Chris McDonnell said he hoped the moral responsibility of gun owners would be discussed.

The conference at Western Connecticut State University is to push President Barack Obama's gun control proposals. It was organized by members of the state's congressional delegation.

Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy revealed his own gun control package ahead of his appearance at the conference. He said Thursday that he wants to immediately ban high-capacity ammunition magazines, require background checks for the transfer of any firearm and expand the state's assault weapons ban. The Democrat has expressed frustration with the pace of the state legislature's efforts to form a response to the Newtown tragedy.

The gunman, 20-year-old Adam Lanza, killed his mother at their Newtown home before going to the school and slaughtering 20 children and six adults. He committed suicide as police arrived.

As a teenager, Lanza studied at Western Connecticut State, earning a 3.26 grade point average before taking his last class in the summer of 2009. Classmates remembered him as quiet, a trait some thought was a result of him being younger than his peers.

Obama is pushing for universal background checks for gun owners, a ban on many military-style weapons and a limit on the size of magazines.

U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, who organized the conference with two other members of the state's congressional delegation, said those measures are achievable. He said the Newtown shooting dramatically changed the prospects for gun control. Continued...

"Two months ago gun violence and measures to stop it were untouchable," Blumenthal said. "The forces of resistance as strong as they once appeared are a shadow of what they were."

A second panel was to discuss mental health and school safety initiatives.

Malloy, Newtown First Selectman Pat Llodra, state police Capt. Dale Hourigan and the mayors of Bridgeport and Hartford planned to participate, along with other experts in the fields of mental health, law enforcement and education.

Gun makers and lobbyists weren't invited to participate in the conference, but Blumenthal said gun rights advocates will have opportunities in hearings and other forums to express their points of view.

How many votes is a photo op with the pope worth?

In this photo released by the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, Pope Benedict XVI meets with Italian Premier Mario Monti during a private audience at the Vatican, Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013. (AP) ? How much weight does an endorsement from a lame-duck pope carry in the upcoming election?

No, not that election ? the one to pick the next leader of the Catholic church. Another key ballot is looming even closer, when Italians go to the polls this Sunday to choose a new premier. And with Italy in a solemn mood over the historic resignation of Benedict XVI, the "moral vision" of incumbent Mario Monti may get a boost to the detriment of the flamboyant, scandal-plagued Silvio Berlusconi.

Even though a large majority of Italian Catholics don't regularly attend Sunday Mass, the Vatican traditionally wields influence on politics in Italy, a country where Christian Democrats held sway for decades. Just about anything the pope does or says is big news. And Pope Benedict XVI has made no secret of his preference for Monti, a practicing Catholic, whom he greeted warmly on Saturday in one of his last private audiences with an Italian political leader.

On the other hand, the Vatican has expressed its horror over the string of sex and corruption scandals swirling around the billionaire media mogul Berlusconi. And with the dignity of the papal transition very much on Italian minds, Benedict's clear preference for Monti could be a factor in making voters think twice about backing a figure who has become synonymous with an amoral, me-first way of life.

Experts do warn: Don't expect the papal factor to sway the election. But it's clear that the candidates may be adjusting their rhetoric to the spirit of the times.

Frontrunner Pier Luigi Bersani, who as a veteran of Italy's left espouses a more secular kind of ethical vision, hammered away at the issue of "morality" at a campaign rally Sunday in the critical region of Lombardy. While he comes from a different political tradition from the center-right Monti, the two share an emphasis on economic reform that could very well make them a good match in a future coalition government.

Italian law bans publication of opinion polls in the last two weeks before elections, so it's hard to tell if the sudden focus on religious affairs has caused undecided Catholics to shift toward Monti, the only practicing Catholic among the main candidates.

But a photo op with the pope is Italian candidate heaven, and Monti, because he is premier, got the providential tete-a-tete with Benedict as part of the pontiff's farewells. That Benedict carved out time in the waning days of his papacy to chat privately with Monti reflected both the importance accorded to the relationship between Italy and the Holy See, as well as the Vatican's own preference for Monti.

On Saturday evening, as cameras clicked and rolled, the outgoing pope and caretaker premier grasped hands and smiled warmly at each other in the ornate Apostolic Palace.

If Monti's rivals fumed, they did so in private.

Milan daily Corriere della Sera wrote of the Benedict-Monti farewell that no politician dared to publicly grouse that their rival was getting an unfair boost for fear of "a boomerang" effect from devout Catholics.

Still, "the parties' silence doesn't erase the annoyance felt in some quarters for an appointment on the cusp of the vote," Corriere wrote.

Bersani's Sunday rally, his last of the campaign, included a surprise speaker, ex-premier Romano Prodi, a practicing Catholic who has defeated Berlusconi in the past and was viewed favorably by the Vatican when he twice governed Italy. Coincidence? Or calculated catch-up?

Monti, an internationally respected economist, clearly has the Vatican's blessing.

When, on Christmas Day, Benedict urged Italians in greetings to the crowd in St. Peter's Square to reflect on a "hierarchy of values" when making important choices, the country's media interpreted the papal message, pronounced from the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, as a virtual endorsement of a second Monti term.

Three days later, Monti announced he was heading an election coalition made up of centrists, business leaders and other pro-Vatican forces that back his "ethical" vision of politics.

In late January, a poll commissioned by Italian Catholic weekly Famiglia Cristiana found more than one-third of practicing Catholics surveyed were undecided, largely in line with the percentage of undecided Italians across the board. But the same poll found that a good deal of Monti's support comes from practicing Catholics.

Overall, polls have indicated Monti would need a miracle to finish first. But he is well-positioned to win enough votes to be the kingmaker for a new coalition, in which he could then be expected to wield sizable influence.

Benedict made no public comments about his final audience with Monti. But the Vatican said that the two shared a "particularly cordial and intense encounter." The pope will also see Italy's president, but not until after balloting ends.

"Any coverage is good for Monti," said James Walston, a political science professor at American University of Rome, about the possible effect of the papal audience.

Even political analysts who doubt the Catholic church carries much weight with Italian voters agree that major candidates keep Catholic sensibilities in mind.

"A political party in Italy, given we are in Italy, with its religious traditions, with the historic presence of the church, tries not to appear anti-Catholic," said Pietro Grilli di Cortona, a political science professor at Rome's Roma Tre, a state university.

When beset by an earlier sex scandal, even Berlusconi tried to sound pious in a pitch to Benedict in hopes of a political boost.

In 2009, during his third stint as premier, amid reports of a dalliance with a high-end prostitute, Berlusconi wrote a Christmas letter to Benedict asserting that Christian values guide his government's work.

And while Bersani cut his political teeth in Italy's now defunct Communist Party, his coalition includes several former Christian Democrats.

In Bersani's coalition, said Walston, "there's a strong element of Catholics."

Home Depot Drops BlackBerry In Favor Of Apple?s iPhone

When it was unveiled, BlackBerry 10 was seen as the shining light for RIM BlackBerry as it heads back to the path of profitability. The platform?s fans think this is the one that will succeed, but the company still has a major problem ahead of it. It?s traditionally strong enterprise customer base is shrinking.

Tom?s Hardware reports that Home Depot is taking its employees off BlackBerry in favor of Apple?s iPhone. It?s a pretty hard hit for the company as Home Depot had 10,000 employees on the BlackBerry platform. It?s unknown if the transition to the iPhone occurred before or after the BlackBerry 10 announcement.

This isn?t the first major loss for BlackBerry as other major businesses and government agencies have been moving their employees off BlackBerry in favor of iOS or Android devices. Late last year, Yahoo kickstarted the migration away from BlackBerry when the company offered to buy every employee a smartphone, but only offered iPhones or Android devices. Soon after, government consulting firm Booz Allen and the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board also moved their employees off of BlackBerry.

Despite all of this bad news, BlackBerry 10 may be doing decently well. BlackBerry announced last week that first day sales of the Z10 was the best the company had ever seen. In a statement to Tom?s Hardware, the company also said that ?over 2,7000 unique businesses in North America already registered for our BlackBerry 10 Ready Program.?

In short, BlackBerry is losing business, and that?s a bad thing. To counter this, it?s Z10 handsets seem to be doing decently well, and it still has quite a few Enterprise customers. That?s a good thing. We?ll have to wait a bit longer to see if the good outweighs the bad when BlackBerry 10 launches across all major carriers in the U.S. next month.

Supernova alert! Astronomers spot warning sign

Astronomers have identified the early warning sign of an imminent supernova: a stellar belch that could indicate the star will explode within a month or two.

By Charles Q. Choi,?Space.com / February 11, 2013

The image shows a simulation of a collision between two shells of matter ejected by a massive star in two subsequent pulsational pair-instability supernova eruptions, only years apart, just before the star dies. Image released Feb. 7, 2013.

Forecasting when stars will die in giant explosions may one day be possible by looking for the warning outbursts they release beforehand, researchers say.

Supernovas are the most powerful stellar explosions in the universe, visible all the way to the edge of the cosmos. These stars detonate for two known reasons: either from gorging on too much mass stolen from a companion star or by running out of fuel and abruptly collapsing.

Astronomers have suggested that stars can give off smaller explosions just before they go supernova. To find out more about supernovas, researchers used three telescopes ? the Palomar Observatory, the Very Large Array and NASA's Swift mission ? to investigate a star 500 million light-years away. The star, which had about 50 times the mass of the sun, ultimately detonated as a supernova named SN 2010mc.

The researchers' data suggest that 40 days before the final explosion, the dying star produced a giant outburst, releasing as much matter as 1 percent the mass of the sun ? about 3,330 times the mass of Earth ? at about 4.5 million mph (7.2 million km/h). [Photos of Great Supernova Explosions]

"What is surprising is the short time between the precursor eruption and the eventual supernova explosion; one month is an extremely tiny fraction of the 10-million-year lifespan of a star," said one of the study authors, Mansi Kasliwal at the Carnegie Institution for Science in Pasadena, Calif.

This explosion radiated "about a million times more than the energy output of the sun in an entire year," author Mark Sullivan of the University of Southampton in England told SPACE.com. But this precursor "is still about 5,000 times less than the energy output of the subsequent supernova."

A Work-at-Home Mom's Guide To A Healthier Self | Balkan Health ...

Posted on Feb 13, 2013 in Fitness

Although there are numerous benefits of working from home, it may not necessarily be the most conducive working environment for good physical and mental health. However, work-at-home moms can ensure that their work situation does not affect their health by inculcating effective exercise as well as general lifestyle practices into their daily routines.

Even if work-at-home-moms have to juggle work with other duties, such as taking care of their children, they can reap numerous health benefits by sparing a few minutes each day to exercise on an elliptical trainer. These benefits include:

? Elliptical trainers enable one to engage in low impact exercise. In other words, they tend to reduce the amount of strain that exercise normally has on the body, especially on the legs. This is a great benefit for mothers who still need to perform other chores in the house once they finish exercising. Furthermore, an elliptical trainer enables one to perform more effective weight lifting exercises, which can prevent health conditions such as osteoporosis, compared to most other stationary training equipment.

? Since elliptical trainers have very few moving parts, they normally require very little maintenance in order to work effectively.

? Busy mothers who work at home may also find the exercise equipment very convenient since it saves time.

The design of the trainer enables users to perform full body workouts during each exercise session. Therefore, moms who have busy schedules can schedule one session per day on the trainer and still achieve their health and fitness goals.

? They offer a good exercise solution for mothers who want to fight the boredom of working in solitude at home. Since they have both stair climbing and treadmill features, users can engage in diverse workout, thereby keeping things interesting. Working from home can lead to physical inactivity especially if there is little movement space in the house. The stair climbing feature creates enough movement to relieve joint and muscle discomfort caused by sitting in the same position for several hours.

In addition to pursuing the health benefits of exercise using elliptical trainers, mothers who work at home can also keep their bodies healthier by incorporating some simple lifestyle changes into their daily routines.

? Eating small portions of healthy food frequently: Perhaps one of the major benefits of working at home is that one can snack frequently. Studies have shown that taking small healthy snacks throughout the day improves the metabolism of the body and consequently lowers the risk of excessive weight gain. By eating regular healthy snacks, one can also reduce the risk of medical conditions such as low blood sugar.

? Stretching regularly: If you do not have home-exercise equipment, you can still reap significant health benefits by taking regular breaks from work to stretch. By stretching the body for 30 seconds every half an hour, work-at- home moms can stimulate blood circulation and relieve sore muscles.

? Pacing oneself: At times, working at home can be overwhelming. For instance, it may be difficult to concentrate on work when one has pending household chores in the house. In order to achieve good health, it is important for work-at-home moms to take a few minutes each today to rest and relax. One can achieve this by using relaxation techniques such as yoga. Relaxation is a major key to avoiding avoid health risks such as fatigue and stress.

All in all, it is important to combine exercise and dietary/nutritional regimens in order to achieve good physical and mental health. Work-at-home moms can attain optimal health benefits by identifying strategies that they can conveniently implement at home.
