University of Nevada, Reno research team finds elusive self-healing formulation for defense, aerospace

RENO, Nev. A research team at the University of Nevada, Reno has developed a new environmentally-friendly coating for aluminum to replace the carcinogenic chromate coatings used in aerospace applications. The chromate conversion coatings have been used for more than 50 years to protect aluminum from corrosion.

The team presented their research last week at the international Pacific Rim Meeting on Electrochemical and Solid-State Science in Hawaii.

"It was well received at the conference," Dev Chidambaram, lead scientist and assistant professor of materials science and engineering at the University of Nevada, said. "There is no question that this will be able to replace the chromate-based coating. Even though the coating formulation is yet to be optimized, the coating has shown exceptional performance."

Attempts to replace chromate coatings with non-toxic coatings have been underway since the 1980s. The awareness on effects of chromates was brought to the forefront in 1993 by the real-life incident involving Erin Brokovich and depicted in the movie released in 2000 of the same name. Although the use of chromates for consumer and automotive applications has been banned, it is still in use by the defense and aerospace industries under various exemptions.

The carcinogenic coatings were exempted from the ban due to unavailability of suitable replacement combined with the high human and financial cost of failure from corrosion. The search for a suitable replacement has been elusive primarily due to one main characteristic of the coating referred to as "self-healing," the ability of the coating to heal itself after being damaged or scratched.

When scratched, the coating components from nearby sites migrate to the damaged region and re-protect the underlying alloy. A short video of the coating formation is on Chidambaram's website, www.electrochemical.org/ under the heading "Cool Videos."

Chidambaram's formulation performs comparably to the chromate formula in its ability for self-healing, which is important to the defense and aerospace industry. The coating can be applied to all aluminum products. The new formula creates an environmentally-benign molybdate-based coating that provides corrosion protection to aluminum, used for aircraft and spacecraft. These coatings, when damaged, will re-heal themselves.

The University of Nevada, Reno team developed and tested more than 300 coatings before arriving at this formulation. They used a complimentary suite of advanced surface analytical techniques such as Raman microspectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, secondary ion mass spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to conclusively prove the presence of molybdate in the scratched region. Further, using electrochemical testing, the team showed the coating re-protected itself via self-healing upon scratch test.

The team includes graduate student David Rodriquez, who conducted the extensive testing on the materials, and undergraduate aerospace engineering major at the University of Colorado, Boulder intern Roshan Misra, who began the project as a high school summer intern from Reno High School. The team is still working to optimize the coating formulation for even better protection.

"This has taken 14 years of work, continuing on work I did at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and the Brookhaven National Laboratory," Chidambaram said.

Chidambaram, as the director of the University's Materials and Electrochemical Research Laboratory (MER Lab), has obtained nearly $3 million in externally-funded research grants in the past three years and directs eight doctoral students and one postdoctoral associate. He is also the director of the materials science and engineering graduate program and the Chemical and Materials Department in the College of Engineering.

Nevada's land-grant university founded in 1874, the University of Nevada, Reno has an enrollment of 18,000 students and is ranked in the top tier of the nation's best universities. Part of the Nevada System of Higher Education, the University has the system's largest research program and is home to the state's medical school. Eli-RG3 rivalry begins? |? Tuck: RG3 'a headache'

Pittsburgh Steelers v Cincinnati BengalsGetty Images

These are not the Steelers you?re used to.

But it?s still the same Ben Roethlisberger, which means they?re always going to have a chance.

With a system, he?s still coming to grips with, a supposed lack of running game and lack of protection, and too many balls on the ground, the Steelers quarterback was undeterred, leading his team to a 24-17 win over the Bengals.

Roethlisberger finished 27-of-37 for 278 yards and a touchdown.

Those numbers would have been a lot better if not for some problems by his teammates (keep reading), but they were still enough.

You can tell Roethlisberger and offensive coordinator Todd Haley are still learning to dance together. Toes are still being stepped on, between getting the steps just right often enough.

He can still move the pocket to buy time, and he can still gun the ball (as he proved on his touchdown to Heath Miller just before halftime).

But all told, his is a game that is generally greater than the sum of its parts. And for a team in a bit of a transition, that?s something they need to count on.

Here are five more things we learned during Sunday Night Football:

1.?If the Steelers have been good at anything over the years, it?s been replacing guys well, and at just the right times.

But there are certain guys they have a hard time doing without.

Without safety Troy Polamalu, their defense lacks any kind of dynamic element. Outside linebacker James Harrison is back in body, but doesn?t appear to be making much of an impact. And their line borders on solid, but can?t change a game.

Where they?ve excelled at filling gaps is on the offensive line. While their blocking has been suspect in the past, they were playing without a pair of starters (inactive center Maurkice Pouncey and right tackle Marcus Gilbert) and kept it going. They protected well, and paved the way for more than enough running, even without their top two running backs (inactives Rashard Mendenhall and Isaac Redman).

2. Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace should immediately ask for the contract offer the team made this offseason, take it, and use the proceeds to by some of the Chargers? (alleged) stickum.

And then he should pass it around.

Wallace was hardly the only ball-dropper for the Steelers, only the most egregious. You can only get so mad at Baron Batch (who gets few opportunities) or Larry Foote (because he?s a linebacker).

But Wallace wants to get rich for catching passes, so actually catching them would be a nice start.

3. Bengals defensive tackle Geno Atkins is not a household name, even though he can get in your kitchen in a hurry.

If he played in more prime time games, he would be better known, however.

The son of former Dolphins and Saints safety Gene Atkins is making his own name, showing the kind of strength to push the pocket in addition to his quickness. His 7.5 sacks last year tied for the league lead among interior linemen, and he?s nearly past that already this year (7.0).

4. The Bengals under Marvin Lewis are typically very sound.

There?s not a lot of flash about them (though you could make a case wide receiver A.J. Green was the best player in the building), but the things they do they do efficiently.

They went out and signed a running back whose claim to fame was not fumbling, and while he finally put the ball on the ground this year, BenJarvus Green-Ellis is a good fit. As is quarterback Andy Dalton. Not special, but effective.

Given the self-imposed constraints they?re under (i.e. their lack of scouting resources) It?s not hard to be sound and the Bengals at the same time, but the even keel they play with is a credit to Lewis.

5. That said, Lewis still doesn?t seem to understand when to challenge and when not to. It?s an unusual blind spot for a coach who is good at so many parts of the game.

He burns way too many timeouts on things that might gain him negligible amounts.

He?s not the only coach with that problem, but it?s a persistent issue for a coach who is good at so many of the larger aspects of the game.

Medical Examiner Rules Pregnant Brooklyn Woman's Death A ...

Vindalee Smith (credit: CBS 2)

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) ?Sources tell CBS 2 that a note was found next to the body of a pregnant Brooklyn mother of four who was found stabbed to death in her apartment Saturday.

The city medical examiner?s office has ruled the death of 38-year-old Vindalee Smith?a homicide. Autopsy results were?released Sunday.

Sources told CBS 2 the computer-generated note referenced Beltway sniper Lee Boyd Malvo being let out of prison and threatening that a pregnant girl will die every week if Malvo is not freed from jail.

Malvo was sentenced to life in prison for six murders in Maryland that were part of a three-week shooting spree in the Washington area back in 2002. Malvo apologized for his role in the killings, telling a court ?I?m truly sorry, grieved and ashamed for what I?ve done.? Malvo?s partner John Allen Muhammad was sentenced to death and executed in 2009.

Smith was?found stabbed to death in her East Flatbush home one day before her wedding and just hours before a planned baby shower. She was eight months pregnant. Her unborn child did not survive.

No weapon was recovered and there was no sign of forced entry, police said. Investigators have been questioning friends and family. Her fiance, Anthony Jackman,?was also questioned and released. He is not considered a suspect.

Police said Jackman was still legally married to a woman in New Jersey, according to a report by the Associated Press.

Smith was a member of the New Dimension Church in Brooklyn and a devout Seventh-day Adventist.

Deep-rooted rifts had given rise to terrorism: CJP | Daily Balochistan ...

LAHORE: Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry said on Saturday that all religions of the world including Islam, teach peace and tolerance.
Addressing an International Law Conference at a local hotel, he said that peaceful methods of settlement of disputes were the preferred option of contemporary religions.
?There have been examples where religious leaders and institutions succeeded in bringing peace through mediation and other peaceful alternatives,? he added.
He said it was unfortunate that human race was fragmented into ethnic sects and groups without understanding the true spirit of religious thought and philosophy.
He said deep-rooted rifts had given rise to terrorism, bloodshed, extra-judicial killings and other evils that were perpetuating extremism and radicalism and affecting global peace.
He said the best way to address issues was through bridging gaps among individuals and states by common understanding and sharing of knowledge about law.
He said that restoration of peace and harmony through adherence to the rule of law was the increasingly acceptable mean for resolving conflicts and terrorism, be it at international or domestic level.
?In societies where the rule of law is weak the law loses it force which leads the masses to violence and transgression,? he added.
He said, ?The greatest contribution that the law makes is that it makes peace through pacific settlements possible. Law is an instrument of peace primarily because it creates the possibility of durable and amicable settlements. As a secondary role, the law is also helpful in dealing fairly with those who have already violated society?s peace.?
He said that in the last five years Pakistan?s lawyers stood up for the rule of law in all areas of life, adding that once people began to stand for the rule of law many conflicts which previously seemed impossible to resolve, started to die down and peace was once again in sight.
He said, ?History teaches us that the most successful way for long-term resolution of conflicts is through law i.e through constitutionalism. ?Nation which value the constitution and its strict application have been successful in overcoming challenges and resolving conflicts,? he added.
He said that scholars were unanimous in reaching the conclusion that successive violations of the constitution and deviations from the rule of law, led us astray and eroded the rule of law in Pakistan.
?The cumulative effect of constitutional deviations and a weak rule of law in the past resulted in the present day militant and terrorist tendencies in certain regions of our country. The state has to respond and counter these militant organizations while responses, however, have to be within the framework of the constitution,? he added.
He said if the constitutional and law had been strictly followed, there would have been no room for resorting to terrorism and all outstanding issues could have been resolved. ?A cursory look at world history reveals the fact that economic development and law are intrinsically linked,? he added.
He said that societies where discretionary powers swayed rule-based governance and where individuals were stronger than institutions, the result was choas and anarchy where everybody loses in the end. ?The present superior judiciary in the country is making efforts that the rule of law prevails and corruption is rooted out from the system and that a transparent and rule-based environment is created where investment flourishes,? he added.
He said the electronic and print media had played a great role in sensitizing the people of Pakistan about the importance of the rule of law and supremacy of the constitution.
He said he believed that in the presence of the media the movement of the rule of law and supremacy of the constitution would succeed despite some concerted efforts on part of status quo-oriented powers to disrupt the flow of history.
He said, ?In the last decade, my learned brothers in the Supreme Court and I have had the privilege to give our constitutional jurisprudence a new direction. Law promise is real and if one stands for it, he is richly rewarded and one of the rewards is peace in society, leading to economic growth, flourishing trade, attraction of local and foreign investment etc.?
The Chief Justice also quoted several Quranic verses and Hadiths to highlight his viewpoint.
Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Yaseen Azad said that supremacy of the constitution, the rule of law and strengthening of institutions were important for democracy.
?Yesterday, the Supreme Court made a historic decision that institutions which do not have any role under the constitution should not take part in politics,? he added.
Supreme Court of Pakistan Justice Tassadaq Hussain Jillani, Sindh High Court Chief Justice Mushir Alam, Indian Supreme Court Bar Assocation President Pravin H Parekh, Supreme Court of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, Pakistan Bar Council Vice Chairman Akhtar Hussain, Supreme Court of Pakistan Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk and others also spoke on the occasion.-APP
