Christie: Comments on Obama, Boehner part of job

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) ? In 2010, Gov. Chris Christie underestimated the first major storm of his administration by flying to Disney World hours before snow crippled New Jersey. A year later, he overplayed Tropical Storm Irene with the now-infamous order, "Get the hell off the beach."

When Superstorm Sandy set its sights on his state, he had learned his lesson: be more hands on, more empathetic.

"I had a sense from the beginning that this one was going to be really bad," Christie, 50, told The Associated Press in an interview last week that reflected on a first term that has now positioned him in the national spotlight and as a potential 2016 presidential contender.

"With Irene, I went back and forth because the forecasts were going back and forth. When the National Weather Service says it's going to be a wipe out of the Shore then they start backing off of that, it's very difficult to set the right tone and, candidly, make the right decisions," he said. "I might have been firmer in Sandy if it hadn't been for the experience of Irene when I got everybody off the beach and nothing really awful happened there."

Christie, by his own admission, is "not a subtle personality" and he likes to take charge. Those two traits figured prominently in how the rising Republican handled Sandy.

From his frequent, televised updates to residents as the storm's winds whipped the state's beaches to his criticism last week of fellow Republican John Boehner's decision to delay a U.S. House vote on federal storm aid, his handling of his native state's worst natural disaster may one day be considered the defining moment in the political career of a budding presidential contender.

The timing of the storm ? days before a presidential election ? ultimately helped define his role in it as well.

Christie has been viewed as a nonpartisan advocate for federal aid since the storm hit Oct. 29. He embraced President Barack Obama's visit to the Jersey Shore six days before the election, inciting catcalls from conservatives.

And last week he smacked down Boehner for delaying a vote on the $60.4 billion storm aid package. Christie said he tried to call Boehner four times Tuesday, but none of the calls was returned. Christie's office received 800 emails in the hours following the governor's Boehner news conference, mostly positive.

Christie said he was just doing his job.

"It never struck me that what I should do is calibrate my language in order to be more political. My view was the (president) was helping us and I wanted to tell people. He deserved that credit," he said. "With Boehner, I would have reacted differently if the speaker had picked up my phone calls Tuesday night and explained what he was doing. The fact that 66 days had already gone by with no assistance, all that stuff conspired to create the reaction that I gave."

Christie has received almost universal praise for his handling of the superstorm. A late November Quinnipiac University poll showed 95 percent of those surveyed thought he did an "excellent" or "good" job managing the storm. The poll also found he'd won over a majority of women and minority voters, two constituencies that had not supported him previously.

People think of Christie as a guy who calls it like he sees it, said political strategist Tom Wilson, former chairman of New Jersey's Republican State Committee.

"He's a Jersey guy," Wilson said. "It's the quality that will carry him through the rest of his political career."

The governor's popularity surge couldn't have come at a more opportune time. It probably helped convince Newark Mayor Cory Booker not to enter next year's governor's race. So far only one major Democratic candidate, state Sen. Barbara Buono, has stepped up to take on Christie in November.

Even Senate President Stephen Sweeney, the state's most powerful elected Democrat, finds himself agreeing with the governor more often than not.

After Christie tongue-lashed Boehner over Sandy aid, all Sweeney could do was nod.

"I want to thank the governor for listening when I asked him to step up and call on his party's congressional members to get their act together," Sweeney said. "I am glad that the governor has joined me in heaping scorn on those Republican members of Congress who have left New Jersey in dire straits."

40-year-old interns finding way back into the workforce - Life Inc.

Landing a full-time job can be tough after taking time off, but now a handful of companies are offering adults short-term, low-paying assignments similar to college internships. NBC's Janet Shamlian reports and Carol Fishman of IRelaunch.com and Lisa Belkin of The Huffington Post discuss the new trend.

By TODAY.com staff

Getting full-time work is even harder when you've got a resume gap, as many moms find out when they try to re-enter the workforce after taking a few years off to raise the kids.

In order to land a new job, you need to be able to talk about your last job -- but no one will give you that job without recent experience. That's why more adults are finding themselves interns at 40. They're also finding internships to be?successful?on-ramps to full-time jobs. Carol Fishman of IRelaunch.com, which hosts conferences dedicated to return-to-work issues, and Lisa Belkin, a Huffington Post senior columnist on family issues, chatted about the trend on TODAY.

These internships are short-term, temporary work arrangements where adults typically work for low pay at reduced hours in order to build up new experience and prove their worth again.

"It's a tryout, and you have to see it that way and you have be willing to take the tradeoffs," said Belkin. "For many women, it's the perfect thing to do."

The company you land the internship with may decide to increase you to a full-time role if things work out and they see a fit, and the "40-year old intern" gets trained up on the latest tools. They're also buffing up their resume.

"It's really important to focus on the experience itself and not so much on the pay," said Fishman. "It's much more productive to focus on what you learned in your?internship then to talk about the fact that you just came off of an eight-year career break."

If the company doesn't offer a formal program, as the trend is just starting to see an upswing, don't feel shy about proposing your own internship.

"If you're in an interview and you think the hiring manager is?hesitant?to hire you because of a career break, suggest a short-term arrangement," said Fishman. "It will take out the perceived risk ... of hiring you permanently."

What do you think of internships for older workers?

This week she shares a recipe for one of her favorite holiday cocktails by Teen Gowler, a Canadian restaurateur. I know the holidays are over, but the cold weather isn?t. Looking at these images, I can almost get excited that the worst of winter is yet to come. I just need to make sure I have my drink cart ready to brave the storms! ??Kristina

Holiday Gin and Tonics

  • 1+ 1/2oz gin (Teen used Hendrick?s)
  • 1/2 oz Rosemary Simple Syrup (below)
  • tonic water
  • lots of ice
  • garnish with a lime wedge and fresh rosemary sprig

?

Rosemary Simple Syrup

Combine one cup of sugar, one cup of water, 3 tablespoons of honey and a couple fresh rosemary sprigs into a saucepan and bring to a boil for 5 minutes over medium heat. Let cool completely and pour into your jar of choice.

Why Pauline Loves This Recipe

Teen and her husband, Trevor, own and run a restaurant called TR McKoys in a resort town in Canada called Clear Lake. I met Teen a few years back when I photographed their restaurant. I stayed in a beautiful cottage for a few days and enjoyed the food, people, staff and, of course, the restaurant. We have been the best of friends ever since. During the spring/summer, whenever I can, I come out to the lake to continue photographing and to spend time with them.

This particular recipe was developed and tested when Teen and I went up to her cottage at the lake in the heart of winter ? just the two of us. I brought up my full camera kit and she brought all the food. This drink was just one of the recipes that came from our time together ? and it sure is delightful!

Kathy Griffin Reacts To Backlash From New Year's Even Antics With Anderson Cooper On 'Late Show' (VIDEO)

Another year, another controversy surrounding Kathy Griffin's antics on CNN's New Year's Eve special. And yet Griffin keeps getting invited back to co-host alongside Anderson Cooper, and she keeps not apologizing for her behavior. This time she's gotten into some hot water for going down and attempting to kiss Cooper's crotch several times.

She talked -- with glee -- about the backlash on "Late Show with David Letterman." Griffin said, "People are tweeting things like, 'I didn't even watch the show, but now I have to explain to my children what you did.'"

The Parent's Television Council quickly released a statement condemning the act, and calling out the network for supporting and condoning Griffin's antics. Will CNN invite her back again next year after this latest round of controversy?

Bravo is showing faith in Griffin's ability to gain attention, even being so brave as to let her go live on her talk show "Kathy" when it returns to the network January 10 at 10 p.m. EST.

Watch "Late Show with David Letterman" every weeknight at 11:35 p.m. EST on CBS.

TV Replay scours the vast television landscape to find the most interesting, amusing, and, on a good day, amazing moments, and delivers them right to your browser.
